15 Most Awkward Gym Selfies Ever Posted On Social Media

In order to be considered for this list, a photo first off has to have been taken in a gym. Secondly, it has to appear like the photograph was taken by the person pictured in it. We specifically chose to write that it appears like they took the photos themselves because in some cases there is no way for us to know with one-hundred percent certainty as we were not physically there. As a result, other than the photos where you can see that the person is holding the camera because of the positioning of their arm, we chose to consider photos that only seem to be selfies. With that in mind, let’s get to the list at hand.

#1. Unsure Flexing

We've all known people who have worked diligently to put muscle on their body and do everything in their power to make sure that everyone around them knows it. While we give these folks kudos for their dedication to improving their bodies, when they so overtly shove it in our faces it becomes a lot less impressive. Don't get us wrong, when you've managed to make your arms as beefy as this dude has we will notice it even if it isn't directly in our faces. We are also much more likely to respect your efforts if they don't seem so designed to impress. So, when this man decided to share this photo of him flexing with the world it was a tad tiresome, but things actually get a little bit weirder from there. Another person whose face seems to tell a story, judging by the expression he is making, it appears as though even he thinks there is something wrong with the photo which makes us uncomfortable for him.

#2. Mr. Dishevelled

We're very pleased that as time goes on gyms seem to no longer be places where only people who've already worked their body to such a state that they appear to be chiseled in stone. No, these days people who've got more than a few extra pounds on their frame can enter these businesses without fear of at least outright derision more often than not. That said, when you take a selfie of yourself in a gym and look completely like a fish out of water who is entirely uncomfortable in your surroundings it probably doesn't help your cause too much. While he may have been in the middle of sets and a regular at this establishment, there is something about this photo that makes it seem as though he should be anywhere but.

#3. Public Undressing

Here is a gentleman who clearly is proud of all the muscles that cover his body and that is fine, but we're pretty confused as to what possessed him to take his pants down in the middle of a gym. While we can't be sure whether he is alone in the institution or not, it is a weird choice to almost entirely undress there. It would have been strange enough had he chosen to do this in the locker room but the fact that he couldn't even wait to go there, or better yet his home or skip the photo entirely, is off-putting. On top of that, why are you wearing black tighty whiteys, my man? We guess it shows off your quads better but that doesn't mean we want to see it.

#4. Spying

When it comes to photos in the gym things seem to be hugely divergent. On the one side of things, when you go on any kind of social media, it appears like it is almost an impossibility to go to a gym and refrain from taking some kind of photograph of yourself. After all, what is the point of exercising if it isn't to let the rest of the world know that you work hard for your physique, right? However, it seems as though there is a tacit agreement among people to refrain from photographing the others present, considering they are liable to be in any kind of state they wouldn't want to be shared. That didn't stop this blonde from taking a selfie of herself that has a fellow gym goer's visage easily visible. Also the fact that the look on her face makes it appear as though she thinks she is getting away with something and it seems as though that was the entire point of the photo, which is awkward as all hell.

#5. Dude Duckface

A facial expression that absolutely invaded social media for a little while, duckface has become so widely recognized and decried that virtually nobody is a proponent of it these days. Typically seen on women and girls in the past, there is something that is all the more ridiculous when a man gives into the phenomenon. Throw in the location and his decision to flex his underwhelming bicep and this whole thing becomes difficult to look at. We can only hope that this image has been around long enough that duckface wasn't as well-known and disliked at the time.

#6. Goofy Show Off

Another gentleman who has opted to share a photo of himself getting his flex on for the world to enjoy, this time around the focus is a dude who is pretty damn huge. While we're pretty happy to admit that we're totally impressed with his highly muscled frame, the goofy look on his face is entertaining to behold. As a result, we're not sure how we are supposed to take this. Does he want us to take this photo seriously or have a laugh along with him because of the hilarity of the situation? The confusing nature of the intent just feels awkward to us in the end.

#7. Treadwhat?

While this list is focused on selfies, that style of photos are far from the only ones that are taken at the gym. We've already touched on the fact that people tend not to take photographs of others at the gym and that the environment is more welcoming but we'd be lying if we pretended it is always that way. That is why there is also a trope where people take photos of others in the gym who clearly have no idea what they are doing with the equipment. Similar to that idea is this photo where a woman can be seen on a treadmill but instead of walking or running on it, she has opted to rest her foot where her hands should be. Did she think we'd be impressed she was using the machinery entirely wrong? If she wanted us to see how flexible she is, did she not recognize that there are lots of places in a gym to logically take a photo like this? Who takes a photo like this?

#8. Suggestive Posture

There is a major problem that anyone who enjoys taking selfies of themselves in the gym must grapple with. As much as you envision yourself getting that perfect image of yourself working out, with your muscles glistening perfectly with sweat as your they ripple under your skin, it is hard to make that a reality. After all, many specific exercises require the use of both hands and even the ones that don't require you to move your arms as a counterbalance or at the least, your body will move with each jerk. In this instance, where this woman seems intent on getting a photo of her lifting some weights, the results are far from successful. Looking as though this is posed instead of being mid-lift, the worst part is the way in which she is bent over which, frankly, makes it seems as though she is about to relieve herself.

#9. Brag Photoshop Fail

Life is hard for teens. They have to contend with the new things puberty hits their bodies with, like gigantic changes in their physicality and an influx of emotions they were previously unacquainted with. On top of that, their peers are all undergoing similar transformations and as a result of the environment that creates there is an unbelievable amount of pressure on them to fit in and impress. Perhaps that is what compelled this young man to poorly photoshop a lot more weight onto the bar that he is effortlessly holding. While the fact that he didn't also alter the image of the bar in the mirror behind him made it abundantly clear what had happened here, it still would have fallen apart after a quick look had he fixed that. After all, had he at least pretended to struggle with the weight of the bar it would have been a lot more believable.

#10. Short Shorts Man

When looking at this photo there is just one question that immediately jumps to our mind. Who wears short shorts? This guy wears short shorts and frankly unless you are a gym teacher from the eighties that is just not a good look for a man. We get it, you enjoy showing off your body to anyone who gives you the opportunity but you don't need to wear next to nothing to pull it off. In fact, you could be wearing a three-piece suit and you'd look dapper as all get out whereas the choice to wear bright red short shorts is just plain awkward.

#11. The Creeper

The second of two photos on this list to involve celebrities in one form or another, this time around we're looking at a photo with Bar Refaeli in it. Pictured alongside a gentleman who seems rather intent on trying to take over the image, his decision to awkwardly show off his six pack is pretty ridiculous. Dude, if you're going to be in a photo with one of the most famous models in the world, any attempt to outdo her is going to be unsuccessful. Instead of making us envy him for his proximity to one of the most famous beauties in the world, we are forced to look at him and shake our heads in confusion. He really didn't have to do anything here but stand with his shirt in a normal position and the results would have been much better. And just where exactly is his left hand?

#12. Pretty Poor Technique

The only photo on this list that we can't say for certain is a selfie, as the subject isn't holding a camera, we've decided to count it because it seems like it must be to us. The reason why we think that is we find it difficult to believe that the theoretical person who could be taking the photo wouldn't intercede and stop him from so poorly lifting weights. Completely off balance and looking as though he may hit the floor at any second, this photo makes us cringe for his safety and anyone else who makes the mistake of walking near him. Add to that, the constipated look on his face and this almost becomes a masterpiece in awkwardness.

#13. The Male Mid-Riff

There is no question about it, this dude has abs for days and would look good with his shirt off. However, when he decided to take his shirt and thrust it partially off into a position that would show off his male mid-riff it meant all we can say is, nope. No matter the type of physique a dude has, unless their shirt is clearly in the process of coming off this will never work. It may not be fair that we appreciate it when women position their clothes in a similar manner but life isn't fair and guys really can't pull off some sexy poses the way women can.

#14. The Ultimate Gym Crime

The only photo on this list that we can confirm has resulted in a full-fledged criminal investigation and eventually charges being laid, when this selfie was uploaded to the internet it went viral. Featuring former Playboy Playmate Dani Mathers on the right, she took the selfie of her laughing and sent it out accompanied by the image on the left of an innocent woman showering in the nude. An atrocious act that totally invaded the privacy of an unsuspecting woman and revealed the nasty attitude of Dani, outrage quickly rained down on her as a result. Charged with invasion of privacy, we're not sure how harsh any punishment she could receive may be but we do know she lost a job at a high profile radio station and had to deal with scorn for weeks. Incredibly awkward as we feel terrible for that poor woman and disdain for the perpetrator, this was the clear number one choice for this list.

#15. Pleasurable Positioning

Looking at this photo we almost wrote it off as an intentional effort to get a ludicrous picture but judging by his earnest expression it really doesn't seem to us like that is the case. Highlighted by the position of the gentleman in front if him, it looks as though he is in the exact right place to make the photographer's experience at the gym a particularly pleasurable one. While we're perfectly happy for anyone who enjoys those activities, a public gym isn't the place for it, even if it is a sweaty and filled with grunts kind of place. Throw in the fact that the third man, who we can see in the mirror, looks like he is laying back having recently done something relaxing and it seems as though this is just a bit too perfect.
