When Wagner Lima passed away in a traffic accident in Brazil, his friends and family all suffered from the loss. The untimely death was felt by everyone, even Lima’s horse named Serono. On Tuesday, dozens of family members and friends gathered for a funeral procession to honor Lima before he was to be let go.

Wagner died after he lost control of his bike while he rode along a beach in front of the city of Paraiba. He was rushed to the hospital where he went through two surgeries, however the wounds were excessively grave. He was a semi-professional cowboy who performed in rodeo shows for 8 years with Sereno, where they won many prizes and tournaments. Wando, Wagner's brother, said that the horse was everything to the late Wagner.

Lima’s brother knew how close the bond between his brother and his horse, Sereno, was. That’s why without a second thought on the matter, he brought Sereno to Lima’s funeral. But nobody expected what happened next. The horse’s behavior at the funeral suggested that he knew what was happening, and that he understood he would never see his owner again. Sereno was overwhelmed by feeling and laid his head on the coffin that his human best friend was inside.

After his brother passed away, Wando promised he would do everything to continue to take care of Sereno. He said that many people had offered to pay a considerable measure of cash for Sereno while Wagner was as yet alive, yet that he generally refused. The brother said that because of this, the horse will stay with the family until the end of time.

Kyioshi Abreu who attended his funeral said, "[Sereno] began to walk around the coffin, smelling the coffin. Then he neighed, It was a very strong emotion. Everyone who was there was moved. I cried myself when I saw that scene."

A veterinarian with the Brazilian Horse Riding Federation said," Horses are aware of death and can mourn the passing of a human they were close with. He said that in the 20 years that he’s been caring for horses, he has witnessed many cases similar to Sereno’s."

It was also revealed that Sereno whined the majority of the route to the burial ground. This is unlike any relationship we have ever seen between a person and their pet. Sereno’s response to losing his owner broke our hearts. While it is easy enough for us to tell our pets how much we love them, we never truly realize what they're thinking. Lima would have appreciated knowing that his best friend was there.
