A man's viral video has caught attention as he boldly drank milk that was weeks past its best-before date, asserting that it still tasted perfectly fine.
Man Eats Expired Food To Show How Long Groceries Can Actually Last
TikToker Gavin Wren aimed to make a compelling statement regarding the reliability of food expiration dates. To prove his point, he opted to consume food that he had purchased several months in advance.
Referring to himself as having a "titanium belly," he has gained over four million views on TikTok with his captivating experiments.
In a recorded video, Wren documented himself indulging in a block of cheese that he had acquired back in November 2022.
What prompted him to go to such extreme lengths?
Wren explained: "I wanted to find a way to help people to reduce food waste."
According to a food policy expert, a significant number of individuals discard food based solely on labeled dates, disregarding the fact that much of it remains safe for consumption.
While not advocating for others to replicate his actions precisely, the man aims to raise awareness and encourage individuals to develop a better understanding of reducing their own food waste.
Since he joined TikTok in 2020, Wren has fearlessly consumed some rather questionable food items.
Fearlessly, he consumed milk that was 41 days past its expiration date and remained unaffected by any sickness. Additionally, he indulged in yogurt that had surpassed its expiration date by 43 days.
Reportedly, the yogurt had started growing mold, but apart from that, it still tasted fine according to Wren.
Ironically, Wren's only encounter with stomach trouble occurred when he consumed spinach which was still within its expiration date.
Wren explained: "It was a bit soggy but I thought I'd be fine." Unfortunately, he fell ill soon after consuming it.
While experts caution against his experiments, they may resonate with individuals concerned about rising food expenses amidst the highest inflation rate in the UK in 40 years.
He said: “The point of the challenges isn't to shock or gross anyone out, but to show people that food can last far longer than you would expect."
"I am shocked by the amount of food that we waste."
He added: "I grew up in a family where if something looked and smelled alright, you would just eat it."
"Maybe that gave me a titanium belly."
According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website, a best before date primarily relates to the quality rather than the safety of the product.
On the other hand, a use-by date is specifically associated with food safety, and the FSA advises against consuming, cooking, or freezing any food items beyond their use-by dates.
Narriman Looch, the FSA's head of Foodborne Disease, issued a stark warning, stating, "Never consume food after the use-by date, even if it appears and smells fine, as it has the potential to cause severe illness."
“We know many people are concerned about food affordability and food waste.”
"There are some things you can do to reduce the amount of food you throw away, such as following storage instructions on the packet, checking your fridge before you shop and trying to use up foods that are approaching their use-by date first.”
Gavin, who is in a relationship with artist Uli Ap, 41, is actively involved in the field of food sustainability
“To help cut waste, we work with food manufacturers on product storage instructions, best-before, and use-by dates.”
Since he joined TikTok as @gavin.wren in 2020, his main objective has been to educate people about the sources of food.
Yet, his recent challenges involving out-of-date food have resulted in an astonishing doubling of his followers within the last three months alone.
Gavin's primary message is to urge individuals to trust their senses by visually inspecting and smelling their food before discarding it. He aims to empower others to make informed decisions and minimize unnecessary waste.
