In news that's pretty bizarre, an American couple was arrested in Thailand for baring it all in a sacred temple. The couple has an Instagram account called "The Traveling Butts" that they regularly post pictures of themselves butt out at various places around the world. After being arrested they deleted the account but it can't take back the damage already done.
American Couple Arrested For Committing Disgusting Act At A Buddhist Temple
Two men dropped their pants at the Temple of Dawn in Bangkok.
Also known as Wat Arun, the temple is one of the most amazing in places in Bangkok. The major tourist attraction is located on the western side of the Chao Phraya River.
Wat Arun is possibly the most majestic of the 31,200 Buddhist temples in Thailand.
The temple gets its name from the Indian God of Dawn, Aruna. Wat Arun is a huge deal for those that live in Thailand. With its gorgeous porcelain encrusted prang, the temple is very sacred.
This is definitely not the kind of place where you take a bare ass photo and post it on Instagram.
Enter boneheaded American couple, Joseph, 38, and Travis, 36, Dasilva. The couple was arrested at Don Mueang International Airport by immigration officials when they were planning to return home to San Diego.
They faced charges of public indecency.
According to local news sources, the police said that the Dasilvas admitted to the offending act as well as photographing and posting it online. What's sad is that these guys are in trouble for something that was completely avoidable.
Keep your pants up!
It doesn't seem like a difficult thing to do. I mean common sense should tell you not to pull down your pants in public, especially in a place that is considered sacred. This is why people don't like Americans. The Dasilvas were forced to pay a $150 fine each and remain in jail at this time.
It doesn't look like this will blow over anytime soon.
The Dasilvas face the possibility of jail time according to Thai government officials. In a statement made to the media, they said: "The charge would not be a normal public indecency charge. Instead, they would be charged with committing indecency in a place of worship, which carries a long jail term."
This should serve as a huge reminder to be respectful of other religions and cultures.
USA Today released a statement received from the Bangkok Yai police department. In it, the deputy chief said that they are pondering adding more charges that fall under Thailand's computer crime laws. Combined with all the other charges, the Dasilvas might wind up in a Thai prison for up to 7 years.
Seven years sounds like a long time for one picture but that's how serious it is.
It just isn't worth it to break the law trying to appease your social media followers. At some point, you just have to draw a line that should never be crossed. Maybe these guys have learned that lesson. Nicole Murray-Ramirez, City Commissioner of San Diego, said that he has been talking to the Dasilvas as well as American officials to see what can be done next.
Regardless of what happens, I bet these two meatheads won't be uploading anything to Instagram for a long time.
