Apple are launching a red version of the iPhone 7 in a joint venture with an AIDS charity

Apple is launching a brand new colour option for its iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, and boy is it one heck of a looker. Behold, the ‘Product (RED) iPhone’.

Apple has previously offered special red cases and accessories for its line of devices, but this is the first time the striking colour has been adopted (in recent times) by its premium smartphones.

#2 Why have they launched a red version?

The new Product (RED) iPhone features a slick brushed aluminium shell in a rich red wine colour, launched as part of the company’s partnership with (RED), a global organisation that works to spread AIDS awareness by tying up with major brands.

The red version of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus is essentially the same as the hardware as announced by the technology giant when first revealing the smartphone back in September.

Apple boss Tim Cook said: “Since we began working with (RED) 10 years ago, our customers have made a significant impact in fighting the spread of Aids through the purchase of our products, from the original iPod nano (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition all the way to today’s line-up of Beats products and accessories for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.

#3 The new devices will be available by the end of this week

The last colour addition the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus got were of the glossy Jet Black variant, aside from the initial Rose Gold, Gold, Silver and Matte Black.

“The introduction of this special edition iPhone in a gorgeous red finish is our biggest (PRODUCT)RED offering to date in celebration of our partnership with (RED), and we can’t wait to get it into customers’ hands,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said.

#4 How can I get my hands on one?

They will be available to pre-order from Friday, with the 7 from £699 with 128GB of memory and the 7 Plus from £819 for the same storage.

The two new phones come with the “best battery life ever” in an iPhone and is water and dust resistant.

Proceeds will be put toward providing access to life-saving ARV medication in sub-Saharan Africa, through charity RED.

In other news the new 9.7in iPad comes with a Retina display screen and replaces the iPad Air 2, first released in 2014, in Apple’s tablet line-up and will start at £339 for the 32GB version of the device.

Apple’s Phil Schiller said: “iPad is the world’s most popular tablet.

“Customers love the large, 9.7in display for everything from watching TV and movies, to surfing the web, making FaceTime calls and enjoying photos, and now it is even more affordable.

“New customers and anyone looking to upgrade will love this new iPad for use at home, in school and for work, with its gorgeous Retina display, our powerful A9 chip and access to the more than 1.3 million apps designed specifically for it."
