Do you live in one of the most dangerous states in America?
We all watch the news with horror when we hear about a crime that happens not that far away from us. While a major crime just blocks or towns away from your house would make anyone uneasy, in the long run, most likely, where you live is relatively safe.
Instead of relying on public opinion and speculation, we wanted to get the facts straight and dug into the FBI crime data in order to identify the most dangerous states in the U.S.
If you’re in one of the places we’re about to highlight, odds are you know things aren’t a place that you can let your guard down too often.
The cities will be ranked on a scale of 1 to 50 with 1 as the safest and 50 as the most dangerous.
15. Florida
Personal and residential safety rank: 36
Florida is the best of the worst on the list. When taking a look at personal safety, researchers found this state has one of the highest rates of people who lack health insurance. Among cities with 100,000 people or more, Jacksonville, Florida, has some of the highest reported crime, with 2,758 violent crimes, 52 murders, 703 robberies, 1,752 aggravated assault cases, and 15,340 property crimes in 2016, according to FBI crime statistics.

14. Mississippi
Personal and residential safety rank: 37
The researchers found Mississippi has one of the highest cases of fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel, as well as the highest total loss amount from climate disasters. Among cities with 100,000 people or more, Jackson, Mississippi, has some of the highest reported crime, with 677 violent crimes, 27 murders, 42 robberies, 297 aggravated assault cases, and 311 property crimes in 2016, according to FBI crime statistics.
13. Oklahoma
Personal and residential safety rank: 38
Among cities with 100,000 people or more, Oklahoma City has some of the highest reported crime, with 2,462 violent crimes, 30 murders, 547 robberies, 1,658 aggravated assault cases, and 12,436 property crimes in 2016, according to FBI crime statistics. This city has a violent crime rate (on a scale of 1 to 100) of 74 and a property crime rate of 67, according to research by Sperling’s Best Places.
12. Oregon
Personal and residential safety rank: 39
Among cities with 100,000 people or more, Eugene, Oregon, has some of the highest reported crime in the state, with 285 violent crimes, two murders, 58 robberies, 183 aggravated assault cases, and 2,941 property crimes in 2016, according to FBI crime statistics. In addition, Eugene has a violent crime rate (on a scale of 1 to 100) of 21 and a property crime rate of 60, according to research by Sperling’s Best Places.
11. Louisiana
Personal and residential safety rank: 40
The researchers found Louisiana has one of the highest total loss amounts from climate disasters per capita, as well as the most occupational injuries which resulted in fatality per total worker. Among cities with 100,000 people or more, New Orleans has some of the highest reported crime in Louisiana, with 2,041 violent crimes, 67 murders, 685 robberies, 990 aggravated assault cases, and 7,586 property crimes in 2016, according to FBI crime statistics.
10. South Dakota
Personal and residential safety rank: 41
South Dakota has one of the highest total loss amounts from climate disasters per capita. Among cities with 100,000 people or more, Sioux Falls has some of the highest reported crime in South Dakota, with 460 violent crimes, two murders, 57 robberies, 331 aggravated assault cases, and 2,664 property crimes in 2016, according to FBI crime statistics.
9. Delaware
Personal and residential safety rank: 42
With a ranking of 9 is Delaware. One of the state’s cities that has received a lot of negative attention when it comes to crime is Wilmington, Delaware. In fact, a few years back, it was called “Murder Town USA” by Newsweek. This city has a violent crime rate (on a scale of 1 to 100) of 94 and a property crime rate of 66, according to research by Sperling’s Best Places.
8. Missouri
Personal and residential safety rank: 43
In the number 8 spot is Missouri. Among cities with 100,000 people or more, Kansas City, Missouri, has some of the highest crime in the state, with 3,668 violent crimes, 51 murders, 862 robberies, 2,577 aggravated assault cases in 2016. And it had 9,204 property crimes in 2016, according to FBI crime statistics.
7. Nevada
Personal and residential safety rank: 44
With the number 7 spot is Nevada. Researchers found this state has one of the most assaults per capita. FBI crime statistics revealed among cities with 100,000 people or more, the Las Vegas metro area has some of the highest reported crime, with 7,277 violent crimes, 83 murders, 2,537 robberies, 3,922 aggravated assault cases, and 22,234 property crimes in 2016.
6. Tennessee
Personal and residential safety rank: 45
Ranking at number 6 is Tennessee. Researchers found this state has one of the highest rates of assaults per capita. FBI crime statistics revealed among cities with 100,000 people or more, Memphis, Tennessee, has some of the highest reported crime, with 5,733 violent crimes, 88 murders, 1,537 robberies, 3,879 aggravated assault cases, and 16,833 property crimes in 2016.
5. Michigan
Personal and residential safety rank: 46
Showing up at number 5 is Michigan. Researchers found this state has one of the fewest law enforcement employees per capita and one of the highest incidences of bullying. FBI crime statistics revealed among cities with 100,000 people or more, Detroit has some of the highest reported crime, with 5,409 violent crimes, 103 murders, 1,130 robberies, 3,909 aggravated assault cases, and 13,442 property crimes in 2016.
4. New Mexico
Personal and residential safety rank: 47
Swinging by at number 4 is New Mexico. Researchers found this state has a high rate of assaults per capita, as well as a high unemployment rate. FBI crime statistics revealed among cities with 100,000 people or more, Albuquerque, New Mexico, has some of the highest reported crime, with 2,897 violent crimes, 32 murders, 847 robberies, 1,825 aggravated assault cases, and 17,888 property crimes in 2016.
3. Arkansas
Personal and residential safety rank: 48
Arkansas comes in at number 3 on our less than stellar list. This state has one of the highest cases of fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel, as well as the most assaults per capita. FBI crime statistics revealed among cities with 100,000 people or more, Little Rock, Arkansas, has some of the highest reported crime, with 1,415 violent crimes, 16 murders, 302 robberies, 1,018 aggravated assault cases, and 6,476 property crimes in 2016.
2. South Carolina
Personal and residential safety rank: 49
Sliding right in at number 2 on this list of dangerous states is South Carolina. The researchers found this state has one of the highest cases of fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel. FBI crime statistics revealed among cities with 100,000 people or more, North Charleston, South Carolina, has some of the highest reported crime, with 435 violent crimes, 15 murders, 136 robberies, 244 aggravated assault cases, and 2,961 property crimes in 2016.

Personal and residential safety rank: 50
It might be surprising but Alaska holds down the number 1 spot as the most dangerous state in America. The researchers found this state has the most assaults per capita. In addition, FBI crime statistics revealed among cities with 100,000 people or more, Anchorage, Alaska, has some of the highest reported crime, with 1,692 violent crimes, nine murders, 326 robberies, 6,853 property crimes, and 1,055 aggravated assault cases in 2016.
