Being accused of stealing because you are black is heart Wrenching! ##shoppingwhileblack♬ original sound - Veleda Spellman
"Being accused of stealing because you are black is heart Wrenching!"
Spellman starts the video with a sorrowful look and making it clear that she has stolen nothing and then hands her camera to a fellow customer, who goes on to document Spellman complying with the cashier's wishes.
She eventually empties the contents of her bags, as well as her pocketbook, onto the floor, revealing she took nothing from the store.
She then shares that she was humiliated by the cashier and even invites him to call the police, as he threatened to do.
Spellman introduces herself in the video as the CEO of Positive Queens, a coaching and mentorship community which aims to empower women to be the beacon of change in their communities.
She shares that she was shopping at this place for gift bags and this is not her first time here.
However, it is likely that this was last as after proving her innocence, the woman furiously claims:
"I'm not spending a dime in this store. I'm very upset and I'm also humiliated."
The woman picks up her items to put them back in the bag and sternly tells the cashier:
"Everybody Black don't steal."
In an interview with The Daily Dot Spellman says that the cashier was determined to prove her as a thief the minute she stepped in the shop.
"There were other people of other nationalities in his store, I was targeted just about the moment I walked in the door."
Spellman's traumatizing experience is a reminder of a recent racial bias in a retail study done by cosmetic giant Sephora.
As per the study:
"Black retail shoppers are 2.5x more likely than white shoppers to receive unfair treatment based on their skin color."
Spellman thanked the woman who helped film her video with the hope that one day they will meet under better circumstances
