#1 Botflies: The Monsters That Can Live Inside You!

They are twice the size of an average housefly, and these fly's bite! The way they reproduce is amazing, though if bitten, you may have the larvae inside your body!

#2 How does a fly so large go unnoticed without being swatted away?

With their big bodies, botflies are hardly inconspicuous, so how can a person end up with the bug's larvae and eventually a maggot living in their skin without swatting the fly away first? The technique is pretty clever! They actually use a mosquito to deliver the larvae to your body.

#3 Human skin is the perfect host for the fly's larvae to grow and thrive.

The fly only produces offspring a few times during their short lives, so they are choosy on where they decide to leave their larvae. Skin of a human provides the perfect location because of it's warmth. The maggot has creepy teeth that allow them to burrow deep into the skin.

#4 The opening looks just like a scab or small bite mark.

When you get bitten by a mosquito carrying the larvae, the heat of your skin warms it up and it drops onto you, where it then burrows down deep. The tip of the squirmy maggot is visible on the outside of your body, which allows the fly to grow and breath. After six week, if left undisturbed, they eventually make way out of your body and drop off, turning into a full grown fly!

If you do contract a botfly, then the best way to remove it is to cover the entrance site with adhesive tape or vaseline to suffocate the larvae. It will pop its head out to breathe, at which point you can pull it out gently with tweezers.
