In many parts of the world, when a young girl gets her period, it is cause for celebration. This is because a girl's first period is a sign of her entering womanhood. Those days of celebration are long gone in most places, but back in the day, it meant that it was time for the young woman's family to start looking for a husband for her. Nowadays, these stories and traditions are just a formality.

The Philippines

In the Phillippines, the mother will soak her daughter's bloodstained underwear in some water. Then, she will smear her daughter's face with that water. Sounds kind of gross if you as us.

South African Tradition

Africa is a huge place that has so many rituals and traditions that we in the Western world will never understand. In this specific region, the girl stays at home for three days and nights then until her period ends. She is not allowed to be seen with men or children.

What Happens in Ghana - Stays in Ghana?

In this African country, you may hear a bunch of weird stories. The tradition here is for the girl to swallow a whole hardboiled egg. If she fails or bites, it is considered a bad omen for any of her future children.

Macedonia

Macedonia is a tiny land-locked country in South Eastern Europe that is filled with Slavic people. This tradition is not too bad. The girl has to wash her own underwear after she starts her period so that she has more luck.

Turkey

This Asian country has a 'slapping' tradition. The girl will get slapped until she has turned so red that she has a sense of shame later in life.

The Symbolic Cake of Iceland

In Iceland, the mother will bake a cake for her daughter. The cake must be done in all red and white to symbolize the daughter's first period.

Japan

In Japan, the mother will cook a dish that is called Sekihan. She does not tell anyone why she has made it. The father and the rest of the family are left to figure that out on their own.

Israel

This Middle Eastern country has one of the simplest traditions that are associated with a girl's first period. Here, the girl simply licks a spoon of honey, so that her future menstrual cycles will be easier.

Malaysia

Similar to Ghana, Malaysia requires the girl to eat a raw egg that has a local oil added to it. This is to ensure that she keeps herself healthy and active in her future.

The Middle East

For this tradition, the girl is put in a room all by herself and has to eat food that only has salt on it. No other spices are allowed.

Brazil

Brazil, the largest country in Latin America, has an awkward tradition. Here, the girl and her family have to tell every single person they have ever known that the girl has had her first period. Embarrassing, right?

Canada

When you start your period in Canada, you get put on a berry ban. The girl is not allowed to have any berries from the day her first period starts. She may only resume eating berries after an entire year has passed.

India

During the first few days of her first cycle, the girl is not allowed to go out much and must stay away from boys. This tradition stems from their belief that a girl is more likely to get pregnant during her first menstruation.

Taiwan

Taiwan's tradition is for the girl to stay away from any cold foods. They are also not allowed to go into any temples until after her period is over.

Latvia

In Latvia, their tradition was to not even talk about getting their first period. Anything that was related to sex used to be very taboo back then.
