Veteran Ernest Walker and his service dog visited a Chili's in Cedar Hill, Texas, planning to partake in the chain's offer of a free meal for military veterans.
He got his food, but before he could finish it, the restaurant manager came over to his table, accused him of not being a real soldier, and abruptly took the meal away.
Yes, that actually happened, and here’s how.
Last Veteran's Day, Chili's offered a free meal to all U.S. veterans.
The restaurant chain reportedly served more than 200,000 free meals across the country.
There was one veteran who did not get his free meal.
Ernest Walker is a 47-year-old U.S. Army veteran.
He went to Chili's for his free meal on November 11th, but while he was waiting an old man approached him.
The man asked Walker where he served. Walker replied that he served in Germany.
The man said that Walker couldn't have served in Germany because blacks were not allowed to serve there.
He also said that if Walker were a real soldier then he wouldn't be wearing a hat indoors.
The old man complained to the manager, and the manager asked Walker for his military ID.
Walker complied and showed the manager his military ID and discharge papers. The manager still refused to give Walker his meal, and even told Walker that his service dog was just a pet and should not be in the restaurant.
The story caused a social media storm.
People all over the country were outraged at the treatment of one our veterans.
Chili's has since fired the manager and issued a statement of apology.
The president of the company said she is working with Walker to make things right. We hope that the chain does something to make Walker know he is respected and valued.
