A woman from Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China has been offered two refunds after both her iPhone X devices were unlocked by her colleague through faulty facial recognition.
Chinese Woman Gets Refund After Facial Recognition Allows Colleague To Unlock iPhone X
It’s a common joke among Westerners that East Asians all look the same.
Well, now it looks like it’s been proven true in China.
The woman, identified only by her surname Yan.
Told the Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation that despite activating and configuring each phone’s facial recognition software, her work colleague was able to get into both devices on every attempt.
According to South China Morning Post:
The Chinese woman Yan called Apple’s customer service center hotline but Apple did not believe what she said. So Yan and the colleague went to a nearby Apple store to prove to the employees that the facial recognition software was faulty.
Fortunately, the employees agreed, and she got her refund.
Giving the brand another chance, Yan bought a second iPhone X and configured the software to unlock upon recognizing her face. Her colleague was still able to unlock the phone.
It is unknown if Yan has used this money to purchase a third iPhone X.
Apple did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
Apple claimed that,
The probability of a random person successfully unlocking another person’s iPhone X using the Face ID is 1 in 1,000,000 in contrast to the Toch ID where the probability is 1 in 50,000.
