By Editorial Staff in Facts and DIY On 25th January 2018

Sometimes your mattress needs some serious attention. Along with refreshing your bed, this easy cleaning DIY ensures a better night's sleep. No need for harsh chemicals or expensive concoctions — all you need is a box of baking soda for this cleaner. The addition of essential oil gently scents your bed, helping to soothe and lull you to sleep.

Cleaning the Mattress

Your mattress is exposed to the worst of you: sweat, drool, shed skin flakes, hair and skin oil, and various bodily fluids. Add to that the allergens, dust, mites, indoor pollution and pet dander found in most homes, and your mattress is ripe for a cleaning. At a minimum, you should clean the mattress every six months, but ideally, do it each season.

Sweat and dirt go right through your sheets and get into your mattress, without you even noticing.

But, it’s not easy to clean, and if you could clean it, it’s still not as clean as if the mattress had gone through the washing machine.

But if you follow these three simple steps, your mattress will be like new in no time. And best of all, you will be able to keep it longer without having to replace it.

sieve

vacuum cleaner

Tip: the amounts specified above apply to a single mattress, so you'll need more baking powder and oil for larger mattresses.

Directions:

Before beginning, flip or rotate the bed, which is smart to do every six months to extend mattress life and prevent sagging. While you're working on your mattress, toss your bedding in the wash, and fluff duvets or feather beds in the dryer.

Open the box of baking soda and add 10 to 20 drops of your favorite essential oil. Close the box and give it a good shake to distribute the essential oil and break up any large clumps. Lavender, chamomile, sandalwood, and ylang ylang are all soothing scents that would be wonderfully calming. And essential oils are naturally antibacterial.

Sprinkle the baking soda over the bed, using the entire box. Now it's time for a mattress massage! Rub the baking soda mixture into the bed, which really gives your mattress a deep cleaning. Let the baking soda and essential oil work its magic for at least an hour.

Here comes the "hardest" part: the waiting.

Leave the powder mix to do its thing for about one hour before carefully vacuuming it up. It's best to use the smallest attachment on the vacuum so that you can catch all of the baking powder.

Finished!

Of course, the method works just as well on sofa cushions or other fabrics that are difficult to wash.

Repeat the process every month or so, or as often as you can. Once a year is better than not at all!
