When Jonjelyn Savage last saw her daughter she says of the terrible shock: “It was as if she was brainwashed. She looked like a prisoner.” Yet she wasn’t in a jail, the 21-year-old wannabe musician was living with multi-millionaire R&B superstar R. Kelly. And now her mom has accused the singer, famed for his anthem of empowerment I Believe I Can Fly, of holding her against her will in a sex cult. Another mom has made similar claims, along with lurid allegations by his former members of staff — all fiercely denied by the singer. They say that six women are being held in the cult, overseen by a “den mother” who “trained” newcomers on how Kelly liked to be “pleasured”.

He is said to have ordered them to address him as Daddy, while he calls them his “babies”. The women are also said to be filmed having sex with the 50-year-old. Former assistant Cheryl Mack, who worked for Kelly for 18 months from 2013, added: “You have to ask for food, to use the bathroom. Kelly is a master at mind control.” She also claimed the girls can only leave their rooms with Kelly’s permission and must turn to face the wall in the presence of any other man. The father-of-three is even said to make them wear uniforms of shapeless jogging suits because “he doesn’t want their figures to be exposed”. If they misbehave, the girls are punished verbally and physically, claim the former staff members. But mostly, they say, the girls have been brainwashed into total submission.

Cell phones are confiscated and replaced with new ones which can only be used to contact the singer. Any other calls require permission. Kelly insists all the girls are living and partying with him completely willingly and says “abuse” allegations are fiction. According to parents’ and staff, the six are held at one of Kelly’s homes in suburban Atlanta, Georgia, or at his recording studio in Chicago. The “babies” reportedly include an 18-year-old from Florida who is Kelly’s “number one”, wannabe model Halle Calhoun, 20, a 25-year-old and a 26-year-old singer songwriter. Also part of this harem, according to her parents, is aspiring singer Joycelyn. Speaking to news website Buzzfeed this week, her mom Jonjelyn, 42, recalled of that meeting with her “prisoner” daughter at the start of December: “It was horrible. I hugged her and hugged her. But she just kept saying she’s in love and (Kelly) is the one who cares for her. “My daughter is severely brainwashed. She’s brainwashed to the point where she says anything he asks her to say. She’s not the same Joycelyn we knew.”

Joycelyn's car dealing father, Timothy, 43, believes his daughter has Stockholm Syndrome, where a person falls in love with their captor. Joycelyn’s family say the drama began in April 2015, when the R. Kelly fan, then 19, got to meet her hero backstage at a gig in their hometown, Atlanta. A month later he paid to fly her and her mom to another concert in California and for a private meeting. Jonjelyn told Buzzfeed: “We stayed there over two hours… just me and my daughter and him. He was going to help her with her CD and I was really impressed with him at first because I have always been an R. Kelly fan.”

Kelly is a hero to millions, having raised himself to superstardom in the Nineties by sheer musical talent, first unearthed by a high school teacher. Born Robert Kelly, he was raised by a single mom in a rough part of Chicago and was sexually abused between the ages of 7 and fifteen by a female relative. Kelly recalled in his autobiography how he was “afraid and ashamed” at the time, but that he has now forgiven his abuser because he suspects she had also been abused.

He explained: “I looked at it as if there was a sort of generational curse, so to speak, going down through the family.” In June 2002 Kelly was charged with making child pornography, accused of filming encounters with an underage girl. When the case came to trial in 2008 he was accused of promising to make the teen a star, and of doing “vile, disgusting” things to her. But the Bump N Grind star was acquitted on all counts and his stellar career remained unaffected. It was also unharmed by several other accusations of sexual misconduct, settled out of court after he made no admissions.

Kelly has now sold more than 50 million albums and with his $148 million fortune and his own label Rockland Records, it is no wonder young Joycelyn thought meeting him seemed like a golden opportunity. But her parents allege Kelly slowly took control of their daughter, who began meeting him for sex. Slowly, they say, Joycelyn started losing weight and dyed her hair blonde as Kelly liked it that way. She eventually dropped out of college.

Jonjelyn says she has pictures of the inside of the Atlanta homes where her daughter and the other girls stay. She claimed: “He has rooms set up like a hotel for the girls. He also had a black room where they do different sexual acts.” The family have had just two texts from the youngster since their December meeting, and have lodged two missing person reports. But after their claims hit headlines yesterday, Joycelyn released a video message insisting: “I just want everyone to know — my parents and everybody in the world — that I am totally fine. I am happy where I am at and everything is OK with me. I have never been held hostage.”

She claims she only stopped contacting her parents because she is upset by their kidnap claims. Meanwhile, the mother of the 18-year-old from Florida who has been described as the singer’s “number one” baby, also says she has grave fears about the situation. Known only as Theresa, the mom said: “I desperately want my daughter back.” The teen was an aspiring singer of 17 when Kelly is alleged to have given her his number at a gig. Soon they were meeting for sex and the girl is then said to have moved into his home and stopped contacting her family around a year ago. One of the other ex-staff members making allegations, Asante McGee, claims to have seen Kelly punish the teenager for breaking his “rules”.

She claimed: “He left (her) on the tour bus for, like, three days and she was not allowed to come out. He said she didn’t do her homework — that’s why she was punished.” Asante also claimed: “R. Kelly is the sweetest person you’ll ever want to meet, but Robert is the devil.” Again, Kelly denies any wrongdoing. In a statement slamming the claims that he holds the six women hostage, a spokesman said: “Mr. Robert Kelly is both alarmed and disturbed by the recent revelations attributed to him. He unequivocally denies such allegations and will work diligently and forcibly to pursue his accusers and clear his name.”

Throughout a glittering career as one of the most successful R&B artists in history, R. Kelly has been dogged by accusations of sexual misconduct. His private life first hit the spotlight in 1994 when, at age 27, he married fellow singer Aaliyah, who was just 15 at the time. She had lied on the marriage certificate, saying she was 18, but the truth was uncovered in the media and the marriage annulled. Two years later he married his backing dancer Andrea Lee, 20. They had three kids together before divorcing in 2009. Also in 1996 the singer was sued for “emotional distress”.

Tiffany Hawkins claimed to have had a three-year relationship with the singer beginning when she was 15 and he was 24. The case was settled out of court and Kelly made no admissions. In 2001 an intern also sued him, accusing him of inducing her into “an indecent sexual relationship” when she was 17. Again the case was settled out of court, along with two more cases in 2002. One woman claimed he had filmed them having sex without permission, another that he had made her pregnant when she was underage. Again Kelly made no admissions.

Then, in June 2002, the singer was charged with 21 counts of making child pornography. He was accused of videotaping the sick sex acts with the underage teen girl. Kelly furiously denied the allegations and when the case went to trial in 2008 both he and the girl denied being the people in the tape. He was found not guilty on all counts. In 2003 he was again charged with making child abuse images after another alleged sex tape was found. Again he denied the allegations and this time the charges were dropped.
