Did Newport Cigarettes, one of the world’s most popular cigarette brands, announce that they would join the marijuana legalization trend and start producing marijuana cigarettes? No, but let's investigate why people believe this garbage story.
Did Newport Cigarettes Really Announce New 'Weed Cigarettes'?
Is the Newport brand about to add a new box to its lineup?
Currently, Newport is the most popular brand of menthol cigarettes, but there has been talk of the tobacco brand venturing into the pot business.
The story goes that these new "Cannabis Cigarettes" would be sold under the brand name, "Newport Nirvana."
The marketing professionals must have had a good time coming up with those alliterative names.
Menthol cigarettes and weed have a long history together.
Smokers of both products say that partaking in a menthol after smoking pot "Boosts your high."
This story about so-called "Newport Nirvana" smokes has gained traction thanks to the legalization of recreational Mary Jane in some states.
Alaska, California, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington state have all legalized some form of recreational marijuana.
Unfortunately for marijuana and menthol enthusiasts, it looks like the "Newport Nirvana" story is a hoax.
The story that was initially circulated was written by entertainment (read: fake) news website, Empire Herald before it was picked up by other sources.
Even pseudo-legitimate news sources like TMZ picked up the article.
In TMZ's defense, the story was well written, with quotes from a fake marketing executive and this picture, which was supposed to be a sample marketing image.
For now, smokers of the sticky-icky-icky are going to have to stick to hand-rolled joints.
With the growing list of states who are open to legalizing this controlled substance, look for major brands to actually step into the marijuana market soon.
