The movie ‘American Sniper’ is known for two things. One is that he has the most fake portrayal of an infant ever seen on film. Secondly, it is based on the true story of the greatest sniper to grace the American military, or so we are led to believe.

Chris Kyle was a Navy SEAL sniper that became known as simply "The Legend" after reporting over 160 confirmed kills. He became sort of a folk tale hero in the military, he became well known to the public after publishing his memoirs that were then licensed for a film. But of course, with every folk tale there are some gross exaggerations that get slipped in. Newly discovered documents have crept up that shows Kyle blatantly spreading falsehoods about the amount of awards that he has received.

In his memoirs Kyle stated that he received 2 Silver Stars for his service, turns out that he only actually got 1 Silver Star. Granted that the Silver Star medal is the highest honored battlefield conduct medal getting even one is quite the feat, but getting two makes you a legend.

The document stated "During his 10 years of military service and four deployments, Kyle earned one Silver Star and three Bronze Stars with Valor, a record confirmed by Navy officials. Kyle was warned at least once before American Sniper was published that its description of his medal count was wrong, according to one current Navy officer, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak about the case. As Kyle's American Sniper manuscript was distributed among SEALs, one of his former commanders, who was still on active duty, advised Kyle that his claim of having two Silver Stars was false, and he should correct it before his book was published."
This is actually a huge problem because the Navy SEALs find is dishonorable to overstate awards. This also adds doubt to the 160 confirmed kill claim because those are self reported, if he is willing to lie about the medals he earned then who knows how much exaggeration he added to his kill count. It just doesn't make sense to lie about it in the first place since 1 Silver Star and 3 Bronze Stars is still quite the amazing feat, adding one more star for shits and giggles can only end badly.
