Disturbing Cases Of Modern Day Cannibalism

Some of the most shocking examples of modern-day cannibalism have been revealed in nations such as the United States, where serial killers such as Albert Fish and Jeffrey Dahmer not only committed horrible acts against their victims, but also consumed their flesh. Even still, such cases seem far away, but every once in a while a case will come out revealing horrific practices of cannibalism in the modern day.

#1 Jeffery Dahmer

The most notorious modern-day cannibal is Jeffrey Dahmer. He killed more than 17 men and boys over a 14-year period, from 1987 to 1991. He lured many sex workers and teenagers to his home in Wisconsin and, after killing them, took to preserving body parts, mostly skeletal, for sexual pleasure. It is thought many of his later murders also included cannibalism and necrophilia. Dahmer was sentenced to life in prison in 1992 but was subsequently beaten to death by a fellow inmate two years later.

#2 Mao Sugiyama

In one of the strangest cases of cannibalism to date, a Japanese chef had his genitals surgically removed and cooked then cooked them for paying dinner party guests. The man, Mao Sugiyama, a 22-year-old from Tokyo who identifies as asexual, had undergone elective surgery to have his genitals removed. Following his surgery, he took the removed parts home and cooked them for his guests, where he served these for $250 per person. Over 70 people in total attended the event, with six guests taking part in the meal which he served with mushrooms and parsley.

#3 Rudy Eugene

In 2012, a Miami man lashed out at a homeless man and started trying to eat his face. Rudy Eugene, a divorced former high school football player, had stripped naked and assaulted a 65-year-old homeless man, Ronald Pappo, devouring much of his face, including his left eye, and had plucked out his right eyeball. The whole 18-minute episode was filmed on closed circuit tv, and his rampage only stopped when he was fatally shot by police. No traces of drugs were found in his system and police have struggled to identify the reason behind the random attack.

#4 Otty Sanchez

No one suspected that Otty Sanchez, a 32-year-old mother from San Antonio, would be capable of murder and cannibalism. Unfortunately, she suffered from mental illness. In 2009, while her 5 and 7-year-old nieces slept in a room nearby, Otty attacked her 3-month-old infant with a steak knife and two swords, murdering and mutilating him. She attempted to eat portions of his flesh, with three of his toes missing at autopsy. Following the murder of her son, she stabbed herself in the heart and stomach in a failed suicide attempt. Upon interrogation, she told the police that the Devil had told her to kill and eat her son, revealing severe hallucinations. She was declared insane and placed in a mental institution in 2010.

#5 Katherine Knight

Katherine Knight had a history of violent relationships, including murdering her ex's puppy in front of him and breaking another ex's dentures. After a turbulent six-year relationship, Katherine Knight broke into her on and off boyfriend John Price's house, and after having sex with him, she stabbed him 37 times. Several hours later she hung up his body, hacked off pieces of flesh, cooked them and served them with cabbage, baked potatoes, and pumpkin. She laid the table for his two children before they came home from school, with the plates containing their father's body. Luckily the police arrived, alerted by worried neighbors before the children returned. Knight committed the murder in 2000 and is now serving life in an Australian prison.

#6 David Viens

On October 18, 2009, David Viens and his wife Dawn, had a very bad argument over her drinking. Frustrated, he did what no normal man would do and taped her mouth and bound her feet, which he claims was done to prevent her from driving around wasted and whacked out on coke. When he checked on her the next day, he found she had suffocated and died. Instead of calling the police, he decided to take her to a cafe he owned in Thyme Cafe in Torrance, California, where he dismembered her and spent the next 4 days trying to cook her body. "I cooked her four days, I let her cool, I strained it out," he told police, though they never found her body. He claimed he then dumped the remains in the bin, aside from her skull which was too big to be disposed of, which he hid at his mother's house.

#7 Armin Miewes

Armin Miewes gained notoriety in 2001 after he placed an ad for a volunteer to be eaten. Armin Miewes told the courts that he had dreamed of killing and eating a human since he was a young teenager. He went into various online chat rooms for many years asking for a volunteer to let him kill and eat them. When he posted an ad on Yahoo chat for a guy to let him cook him alive, he got a response. When Miewes met up with his victim the two hit it off and Miewes proceeded to cut off the young man's genitals. Together, the pair cooked the body parts and consumed them. After a few hours of companionship, Miewes stabbed the victim and filleted the body, cutting off portions at a time and barbequing it for dinner, often using gourmet recipes that included wine and herbs. Miewes filmed the entire event, and, over the next ten months consumed the entire body. His is serving life in a German prison.

#8 Stephen Griffiths

Known as The Crossbow Killer, Stephen Griffiths ensured his place in history as a cannibalistic serial killer after he pleaded guilty to murdering three prostitutes. He had a specially prepared bathroom which also served as a slaughterhouse, complete with drainage and special plumbing. In the bathroom, he skinned his victims with everything from power tools to Samurai swords. In police interviews, he admitted that he cooked most of the body parts but had even eaten raw human flesh when his cooker broke down.

#9 Omaima Nelson

In pursuit of the American dream, Egyptian-born model Omaima Nelson moved the United States in 1985. Soon after relocating, she met William Nelson, a man 33 years her senior. It was an unhappy marriage, with William abusing Omaima repeatedly. The relationship was rocky from the start, and later she murdered her husband and dismembered him. After freezing his body, she decided to thaw it out and cook it. At her trial, experts revealed that she barbequed many of Williams remains and even fried his hands in flour and oil. During her trial, she revealed she had deep fried his hands, barbecued his ribs, and boiled his head. According to Omaima, these grisly acts were performed in accordance to various Egyptian beliefs regarding meeting her husband in the afterlife.

#10 Joseph Oberhansley

In 2014, the relationship between Tammy Jo Blanton and boyfriend Joseph Oberhansley, an ex-con, took a turn for the worse. After receiving a call by concerned co-workers, the police arrived at Blanton's residence and found a grisly scene. Her body was found in her bathtub, cut wide open. Some of her organs had been removed and police were able to follow the trail to the kitchen where they found pots, pans, plates, and utensils covered in blood. Oberhansley, still inside the home at the time the police arrived, admitted to cooking then eating various parts of his fiance, including her heart, lungs, and brain. When questioned by police, Oberhansley confessed to forcing his way into the bathroom, where Blanton had locked herself, and repeatedly stabbing her, then raping her before using an electric jigsaw to open her skull. He had previously served 14 years for manslaughter in the 1998 shooting death of his then-girlfriend, 17-year-old Sabrina Elder, in Salt Lake City just days after the birth of their son.
