Once upon a time, I was a child who ate McDonald’s Happy Meals. And do you know what my favourite part of the meal was? No, it wasn’t the toy that came inside the box. And no, it wasn’t even the box itself, which I would carry around for hours afterwards pretending it was a brand new handbag.
No, it was the McNuggets of course! For some reason, it was those little pieces of chicken that would hold my undivided attention until I’d devoured the entire box. And one thing I noticed whilst I was munching away was how the nuggets only appeared to come in four shapes.
Ever since an accusation that McNuggets are made from pink slime, the public has been curious about how the addictive treat is made.
A new video shows the actual process, and thankfully, this goop is not part of it.
First, the breast meat is removed and ground up with the chicken skin to give it more flavor.
That mixture is blended with a variety of seasonings and then the shapes are cut.
McDonald's chose to cut McNuggets into four shapes.
A spokesman for the company said "The four shapes we make Chicken McNuggets in was the perfect equilibrium of 'dipability' and fun. Three would've been too few. Five would've been, like, wacky."
It's not the most scientific explanation, but we have to agree that it makes sense.
The variety of shapes also gives the impression that the pieces are coming from various arts of the chicken.
That is not the case.
All of the shapes are cut from the same mixture of chicken breast, chicken skin, and seasoning.
A video from a Tyson plant shows the process with a good deal of transparency.
The video is pretty fascinating to watch, and puts to bed the rumor that pink slime is involved in the process.
Here's the McNugget-making process from chicken to Happy Meal.
Now, is anyone else getting hungry?
