If there’s one thing we know about people, it’s that they, for the most part, have eyes. Which is cool. Eyes have their merits but, you know… they’re all pretty samey. Brown, green, somewhere in the middle, blue, sort of a weird grey… we’ve seen them all.

If there's one thing we know about people, it's that they, for the most part, have eyes. Which is cool. Eyes have their merits but, you know they're all pretty samey. Brown, green, somewhere in the middle, blue, sort of a weird grey we've seen them all.
But what's going on? Where do they come from, eh?

In the beginning, all humans had brown eyes. But a gene called OCA2 came in to play which resulted in changes to the pigment amount which, in turn, changed the shade of brown.
With this info under their science belts, scientists had searched for the source of blue eyes on the OCA2 gene for many years with no success. But then they found something incredible.

Every single person in the world with blue eyes descends from one European who lived around 6,000 to 10,000 years ago. They had the initial mutation that lead to the widespread iris colouration that we all know and love today.

At the present, the earliest set of blue eyes ever found belong to a 7,000 year old Spaniard. Obviously the eyes are nothing short of dust but, you know science.
Are you the descendant of an ancient European mutant? Let us know in the comments!
