Spiders are freaking creepy. They are all small and hairy and sinister looking. They are as alien to us humans as anything can possibly get on this planet. Not only that, they are everywhere! It's a fact that for every square meter in the world there are around 131 spiders. That's pretty scary. It gets even worse in some areas where there can be thousands per square meter. For all those people who are afraid of these eight-legged freaks I have some bad news, scientist are pretty sure that spiders could wipe out humanity in just a year.
Experts Say That Spiders Could Possibly Wipe Out Humanity In Just One Year
With one horrifying sentence, spider haters around the world shuttered.
It all started with a statement made by a spider expert in Australia. Kane Christensen, the Head of Spider research for the Australian Reptile Park said: "There are more spiders in the world than humans. If they all ganged up they could crush us."
That statement was back up by facts.
Earlier this year The Washington Post shared a terrifying report that claimed that spiders eat more in weight than the overall weight of every person on the planet. For reference, it's believed that humanity weighs a total of 316.3 tons.
Spiders in Australia outweigh humans.
Christensen is certain that he is correct especially since he's backed up by facts. He pointed out that Australia has such a large spider population that they outweigh people in the country by a wide margin.
This research is disturbing, to say the least.
Martin Nyffeler and Klaus Birkhofer of the University of Basel and Lund University respectively led the disturbing research. Their findings were published in the December issue of Science of Nature.
Spiders eat a lot.
You may find this hard to believe but on a yearly basis, siders eat somewhere between 400 and 800 MILLION tons of meat. For those keeping track, the total of humanity is about 316.3 million tons. That means spiders can eat more than double the total weight of humanity.
People don't even eat as much as spiders do.
As a whole, humanity consumes just under 400 million tons of meat every year. That means that not only do spiders eat more than our total weight, they also eat more than we do in general.
Now I know what you're thinking, would spiders ever try to eat us and end humanity?
One man wants to give spiders a chance.
Indie rocker, John Darnielle, of the North Carolina based band, The Mountain Goats, has started a petition asking Senator Al Franken to let spiders have all they need to help then eat us.
His petition reads: "It’s reported today by the Washington Post that spiders could eat every human on earth within one year. While we, the undersigned, are certain the spiders are doing the best they can, it’s clear that they could use some help."
The petition continues.
"We call on the United States government to utilize whatever resources it deems necessary and effective to help the spiders in their noble cause. We’re sending our petition to Sen. Al Franken because he’s one of the few people in Washington who we sort of half-trust to not initiate surveillance on us or flag our tax returns for signing such a petition."
I really hope he's joking.
While Darnielle may be hoping for spiders to rise up and consume us all, Christensen said it's not likely that spiders would begin to eat humans any time soon because it's not in their nature to do so. That may be true, but you know what is in their nature? Being creepy little buggers that need to be killed with fire!
