A 23-year-old Mexican fitness celebrity died after undergoing a medical procedure to manage excessive perspiration. Odalis Santos Mena, a Mexican bodybuilder, died after receiving the MiraDry treatment, which is promoted as a fast procedure that permanently decreases sweat and stink.
Odalis Santos Mena, 23, died in the Mexican city of Guadalajara. Her death was most likely caused by an anesthetic and a steroid she had taken, according to the coroner's report.
SkinPiel, the skincare clinic where she had the treatment, claims she did not inform them that she was using the steroid.
She was offered MiraDry, a therapy to minimize underarm sweating, in exchange for advertising on her social media accounts, according to local publication Plumas Atomicas.
The treatment is supposed to operate by removing sweat glands using heat energy, as well as reducing body odor and underarm hair.
After being anesthetized, she experienced a heart arrest, and officials at the facility were unable to revive her with CPR, according to the New York Post.
Odalis had posted on Instagram Stories just before her death that she was undergoing therapy.
Her cause of death was determined to be a mixture of anesthesia, Clenbuterol, creatine, and oxandrolone.
Clenbuterol is a sympathomimetic amine that acts as a decongestant and bronchodilator, whereas creatine is a natural substance that is used as a sports supplement, and oxandrolone is an androgen and anabolic steroid.
The clinic claimed to have done everything possible to save her and was unaware of the steroid she had taken, according to the Daily Mail.
It said: "Upon delivering the signed form to the doctor, he asked [her] again about substance use, and [she] verbally reiterated that [she] had not."
The prominent influencer from Autlan de Navarro was a regular competitor in fitness events. On Instagram, she has nearly 150,000 followers.
She was named Miss y Mr. Hercules 2019 (Miss and Mr. Hercules 2019) Campeona Wellness (Wellness Champion) and placed second in two swimsuit competitions last year.
Shortly before her death, she also won the Wellness Fitness Juvenil (Youth Wellness-Fitness) competition at the Mr. Jalisco Juvenil y Veteranos 2021 (Youth and Veteran Mr. Jalisco 2021) event.
She was also pursuing an undergraduate degree in nutrition and was claimed to be in a loving relationship with Victor Gomez Carreno, a personal trainer, and nutritionist.
His final tribute was heartfelt and it read: "Your actions in life, echo in eternity. I will take you with me forever short, it makes no sense to write here what I feel in my heart @odalis_sm, I love you."
