#1 Gas Is Cheaper Than You Think

Fuel prices have dropped drastically over the past few months, resulting in some of the lowest gas prices of the year. But they are on the rise once more, prompting us to wonder how the price of a gallon of gasoline stacks up against other common items we purchase every day. We also threw in a few theoretical gallons for fun. Who knew a gallon of toothpaste would be so expensive?

#2 Food & Drinks

Gas is mixed with ethanol, which is made from corn. Corn is used to feed cows. When there is a bad crop year for corn, the cows don't get fed, and milk prices rise, making milk more expensive to buy than gasoline. While these prices seem ridiculous, they are based on statistics from the US Agriculture Department from January 2016.

Figi bottled water costs more than gas, at $7.50 a gallon, and Nestle bottled water is actually the cheapest, besides Walmart 's Great Value brand, and that is about $3.95 per gallon.

#3 Ice Cream And Olive Oil

Ice cream is made from milk, which is hard to come by when there is no corn because it's being mixed to make our gasoline for our cars. Olive oil is one of the most expensive products sold in a grocery store, according to the Grocers of America. Pure olive oil is mainly imported, making it very costly.

A gallon of Coke would set you back $3.88, and a gallon of store brand yogurt would cost you $13.33. A gallon of Hellman's Mayonnaise: $15.88.

#4 Home Improvement Items

The least expensive paint is cheaper to buy than a gallon of gas. It's expensive by the gallon, of course, but it would take you over $400 to fill a car's tank up with paint. Just don't try it or you'll be sorry.

If you purchased a full gallon of Resolve Carpet Cleaner it would set you back over $27.40. Paint thinner: $13.88 a gallon. Cheap floor polish, around $12.75 a gallon.

#5 Laundry Detergent

A good laundry detergent, like Tide, certainly is more costly than gasoline. It would be cheaper for us all if we could wash our dirty clothes in gasoline, but we wouldn't be able to go near any lit matches or have a barbecue.

The less costly detergents do the same job as the expensive brands, and often times are made side by side in the same facility.

Clorox Bleach will set you back $3.45 a gallon, and Purell Hand Sanitizer would cost you $25.60 if you bought it by the gallon. Cheap shampoo: $25.85 per gallon.

#6 Alcoholic Beverages

Plain old cheap beer costs a drinker about $9.57 a gallon, depending on your location, while a gallon of wine would run a cheap wino $45.74 per gallon. A full gallon of Guinness will cost you... are you ready for it? $66.00 a gallon!! I'm sure some of you can drink that much in one night, but it a bit unreal when you see it in these terms.

#7 The Best Deal

So what alcohol gives you more bang for your buck? Vodka. At $68.00 for the cheap brands on the bottom shelf, it's cheaper by the gallon than the other beverages.

#8 Health & Beauty

If you could by toothpaste by the gallon, it would cost you $140.15 for Colgate. And that's not the newer whitening brand either. Crest would cost you $177.25 for a gallon, and Listerine if sold in gallon containers would cost about $37.10.

#9 OMG Eye Drops

If you need to use eye drops for medical purposes you already know they are expensive. But have you ever thought about just how expensive they really are? A gallon jug of Visine, just plain old Visine, not the red eye or other 'new and improved' version, will cost you almost $1,800.00!

A gallon of cough medicine Robitussin will cost you $128.00, and a gallon of Nyquil will cost $102.00. That's a lot for sleep, but it should last you a year or more.

So what's more expensive than a gallon of gas? Just about EVERYTHING! So stop complaining. It could be worse.
