Flushing the bog accounts for around 27 per cent of Americans' water usage, according to the MIC.

While most toilets use 1.6 gallons of water at each flush, older models use between 3.5 and 7 gallons.

If the average adult has a tinkle around seven times in 24 hours, and flushes after relieving themselves, 49 litres of of water is flushed away every day, the Metro reported.

Over a year this adds up to over 17,000 litres of water per person, but if you hop into the shower for one of your daily wees then you can save 2,555 litres per year.

#3 Have you tinkled in the shower before?

A standard shower head uses 2.5 gallons of water per minute, and around 0.875 gallons of water can escape just while you are emptying your bladder.

In 2014 Students at the University of East Anglia launched a campaign to encourage the 15,000 students "to take their first wee of the day while having their morning shower."

The campaigners argued that if all the students complied the school would save enough water to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool in a year.

#4 Stop spending so much money on loo roll

This water-saving tactic isn't an ideal solution, though, as slipping off into a day dream and taking a long shower results in further loss of water.

But there are a couple of other reasons to change where you wee including a more hygienic bathroom experience and cutting down on the amount of loo roll you can save.

If you use 10 squares of paper per wee, and the roll has a total of 500 squares, then you would save one loo roll in less than two months.

What do you think, is it worth a try?
