A guy caught on video booting a little cat into the water faces a decade in prison, just weeks after severe new animal cruelty rules were implemented.

After receiving the video from concerned public members, Greek authorities detained a guy on suspicion of kicking the cat into the sea.

Three individuals are seen dining outside on the island of Evia in a video from the tragic incident.

Two cats approach before a man pulls one over to the water's edge with a piece of fish.

The country's police minister expresses gratitude to all who assisted in bringing the guy to justice.

Minister Takis Theodorikakos said on Facebook: "A while ago, a person was arrested by the Greek Police who kicked and flew a kitten into the sea. Violence against animals is unacceptable.

"The government has passed a strict law on protecting animals from abuse, which is now in effect, but this is a matter of humanity and culture in every case.

"I am deeply saddened for those who abuse animals and those who tolerate it.

"I heartily salute those who pointed out the issue. The reason now belongs to Greek justice."

Thankfully, sick residents brought the kittens to the clinic, and both were confirmed to be unharmed, according to Greek media.

People flocked to Facebook to demand that the individual, who has yet to be identified, be given the worst penalty available.

One said: "Well done my minister, a lesson to all those who think they can mess with the helpless creatures."

A third person wrote: "People who abuse all animals should be made an example of by being heavily fined and jail time then and only then these inhumane fools will learn. Politicians stand up and help these defenceless animals."

Meanwhile, the cat survived the trauma. According to a member of the local animal society who investigated the situation, the cat belonged to the restaurant's owner, who assured that both kittens were well. Following the abuse, the cat was kicked into the sea and was taken for a medical examination.
