He voiced his criticisms of the 18-year old after she protested outside the Glasgow Climate Summit. He said that while he agreed with the stance he thought the protest was ‘pointless’.

“I simply don’t get the Thunberg phenomenon.”, he wrote in his column.

"She has no knowledge of how the world works, no manners and no letters after her name because instead of going to school, she's been busy sailing round the world so she can be mardy and abusive to grown-ups.”

Clarkson continued to criticise the young activist in his rant saying, "What she needs is a smacked bottom."

"Here's a tip, Greta: lecturing me on what needs to be done is pointless. It'd be like standing in my bedroom every morning ordering me to wear clothes. I know already.”

Ignoring the fact that the bulk of the damage done to the environment was by western countries he continues to say that Greta’s efforts need to be focused on different countries.

"What you should be doing instead is cycling to countries where people are perhaps less well aware of what should be done. China for example.”

He further goes on to chide her, saying, "That I'd like to see. Greta standing outside Zhongnanhai with her parka and her Glastonbury backpack and her microphone, lecturing the leaders about their policies on coal and trees and so on."

Greta’s protest at Festival Park contained chants that said, “You can shove your climate crisis up your a**e!”

She further added, "Change is not going to come from inside there - that is not leadership, this is leadership. We say no more blah blah blah, no more exploitation of people and nature and the planet.”

"No more exploitation. No more blah blah blah. No more whatever the f**k they are doing inside there."

Jeremy Clarkson has since been facing backlash for his comments.

"61  year old Jeremy Clarkson calling for 18 year old  Greta Thunberg to have her bottom smacked deserves a far more WTAF???? response than it got. Middle aged white men using  column inches to have pops at a young girl who is concerned about the environment is just fucking weird."

Most found the 'smacked bottom' comments 'creepy' and 'weird'.

"There’s a creepy shivery dirty old man weirdness to Jeremy Clarkson’s attempt at humour this week in his rage at Greta Thunberg."

Greta continued to stand firm in her criticism of performative meetings and added another old man to her list of haters while continuing to advocate for climate change.
