A Rhode Island man who streamed himself on Facebook Live driving 116 mph and weaving in and out of traffic was critically injured when he crashed into a garbage truck and a concrete barrier, police say.
Onasi Olio-Rojas, 20, of Pawtucket, lost control on U.S. Route 6 in Providence.
The video posted on Olio-Rojas' Facebook page shows him driving 114 mph and weaving through traffic before reaching a top speed of 116 mph.
Police confirmed the video's authenticity with a local news station.
The Facebook Live video stops before the car crash involving Olio-Rojas.
Police say Olio-Rojas hit the truck as it got on the highway, then crossed three lanes and hit the barrier.
Rescue crews extricated Olio-Rojas from the Honda Civic.
He was in critical condition. The truck driver wasn't hurt.
A state police spokesman told the Providence-Journal that witnesses said that Olio-Rojas had been driving erratically before the incident.
Traffic was backed up for at least two hours.
Police are still investigating and might bring charges.
State police told the newspaper they haven't discovered signs of impaired driving.
The video streamed as it happened on Facebook Live captures the vehicle's speed climb from 37mph to a staggeringly fast 115mph, which is 45mph over the maximum speed limit in America.
Three minutes into the video, it suddenly cuts out and the image of the driver's wrecked vehicle appears.
The video is captioned:
"A Driver in Providence, Rhode Island filmed himself driving at speeds over 115 mph while weaving through highway traffic before losing control of the vehicle and crashing into the back of a garbage truck."
The driver captures a moment many of us will have seen on our Snapchat feeds: Our friends driving, singing along to music and filming themselves at the same time.
But this incident a shocking example of when modern society's vanity and exhibitionism collides with reckless abandon should serve as a warning to all drivers to concentrate on the roads and stay safe.
After all, this individual's behavior put so many lives at risk.
