Fortune Cookie Writer
Believe it or not fortune cookies are an American thing. In China, Chinese restaurants don't normally give out fortune cookies. Food companies such as Wonton Food, Inc. hires a team of freelance writers to write their fortune cookie messages. Usually their data base of messages have about 15,000 messages. Contracted writers renew that data base with fresh new messages. It is estimated that these writers earn approximately $40,000 a year.
Dog Food Taste Tester
While these jobs are usually not posted to the public, if you look in the right places, you will find them. Dog food testers must not mind putting dog food in their mouth and thoroughly chew it and be able to suggest any improvements to its flavor. They are not required to swallow each bite, most spit it out once done with their evaluation. They get paid abour $40,000 a year.
Odor Tester
You could test an array of things like scented garbage bags, fresh smelling cat litter, perfumes, deodorants, the list just goes on and on. These workers must have a degree in chemistry and make about $35,000 a year. I think a job like this would give me a headache.....I'd rather test dog food!
Gross Stunt Tester
People are actually hired to be Gross Stunt Testers. In order to avoid a lawsuit, television shows like Fear Factor and Survivor hire these gross stunt testers to make sure stunts like eating a delicacy like this unborn chicken egg or laying in a tank of snakes or eating coagulated blood or live Madagascar roaches and anything else disgusting you might have seen contestants do. These testers can make up to $800 a day.
Golf Ball Diver
Whether you play golf for enjoyment or professionally or if you don't play golf at all, being a Golf Ball Diver is considered to be the most dangerous job in golf. Many divers have lost their lives trying to retrieve these balls. Either by faulty equipment, getting tangled in fishing wire, and it doesn't matter if you have 50+ years experience or a new dive you're always in danger not to mention running into an alligator! Wes Stanfield a golf ball diver kept the head of an alligator he wrestled with. The murky waters harbor bacteria that can cause lock jaw among other illnesses. Recovered balls don't sell for much. About 20¢ a piece only to be resold in pro-shops for $2. Golf Ball Divers average $100,000 a year.
Hotel Tester
Qunar, based in Beijing is a company that helps travelers make the best choices as to where to stay and best flights and such, hired 3 people out of 7,800 people to be "Hotel Testers". So if you're always getting in trouble for falling asleep on the job, this job might just be perfect for you. Zhuang Jing is a professional 'Hotel Test Sleeper'. Putting herself in the shoes of travelers of all ages and needs and genders making sure that all the needs and conveniences of travelers are met. She tests for comfort and cleanliness including inspecting the mattress, checking the comfort of the pillows, taking pictures of the room and items in the room such as towels, slippers and the lotions, shampoos and body washes/soap and even the plastic drinking cups most hotels provide. She is kind of like a Secret Shopper. She has to be careful not to let the places she stays at know what she is doing. After her stay she does a write up of her review which include details about the hotel itself and the location. Also if their prices are with in reason for what they provide and if their is dinning and all around cleanliness. Since March 2010, when she began this job she has slept in over 200 hotels. Hotel Testers can make up to about $120 per stay (not per night) so one night stays are usually best. Averaging around $48,000 a year.
Laughter Therapist
While being a licensed therapist would help you to better understand the benefits of this type of therapy, you don't need any thing more than a high school diploma or a GED to become a Laughter Therapist. To be on your way to becoming a Laughter Therapist just find a laughter therapy certification program. Laughter therapists are trained to use special techniques to combat both psychological and physical pain. What could be better than getting paid to make people laugh? Laughter Therapists make on average $42,627 a year. Most have other jobs and doing laughter therapy only part time.
Paint Dry Watcher
Keith Jackson is a professional paint dry watcher. He began watching paint dry when he was 16 and has been doing this for over 30 years now. But he doesn't just "watch paint dry", he also does various tests that determine how different environments affect the paint and how it dries. He also is able to determine how long it will take to dry for each type of paint. No one will say how much they make but the rumor is that the pay is pretty good.
Septic Tank Servicers and Sewer Pipe Cleaners
Probably one of the most disgusting jobs there ever was! Suited up in full contamination rubber suits that cost on average $7,500 and will only last through 150 - 300 dives. Their helmets weigh just under 25 pounds. They can't swim through the murk. It is so dense that they do their work blindly. Standby divers are fully suited and ready to dive in in case anything goes wrong. The slightest little rip in their diving suit will cause the dive to abort. They have to immediately clean and disinfect any contamination as it can cause a very serious health issue. "Every single diver has to have every inoculation on the list because there are numerous diseases floating around in there" says one diver. Divers can be down there for up to four hours unclogging and repairing pipes. There are team members in full plastic protective gear for the wash down after a diver returns to the surface, especially after sucking out 500 feet of "poo". Divers earn typically between 24000 and 36000 depending on the level of education and state they work in. Averaging about $33,000 a year. In Connecticut divers can earn as much as $46,600.
Professional Luggage Packer
Believe it or not there are people who actually hire professional luggage packers. Many moms will hire them to pack their child's suit case for their first time away at camp. At $250 an hour, this could end up costing the parent upwards of $1,000 per child. Their job is to pack anything and everything that a client wants in that suit case or trunk. She says many of her clients want all the comforts of home like their bed sheets, scented candles and their special soaps. An average job takes between 3 - 4 hours. Pretty nice money!
