10 nifty ways to use a tampon if you're ever trapped in the wilderness.
#1 Crude Water Filter
Tampons serve as excellent water filters (if you're in desperate need of one, of course). They can't actually filter out any chemicals, heavy metals, or biological threats, but they can be used to effectively remove sediments and the dreaded "floaties" from water.
#2
The tampon is pushed into the neck of the water bottle and a hole is poked into the cap of the bottle. Dirty water is poured in and comes out nearly crystal clear as a result of the tampon filter.
#3 Medical Bandage
Tampons are designed to be extremely absorbent, which makes them perfect for bandages. Tampon use as a medical tool dates as far back as World War 1 where medics used them to plug bullet holes until the wound could be properly treated.
#4 Fire Starter
Tampons are made of cotton, and as a result of this are extremely flammable. You can create a nice steady fire and, if done properly, can use one tampon for multiple fires.
#5 Crude Straw Filter
Under extreme circumstances when you have no other options, you can use the applicator with some of the cotton (placed in the middle) as a straw filter.
#6
Look at Creek enjoying that water. Similar to the previous filter, this one removes sediments and large particles with the cotton from the tampon.
#7 Candle Wick
The cotton string from the tampon serves as an excellent candle wick. Creek used a shell he found by the creek, rendered animal fat, and the cotton string to create his candle. By soaking the cotton string in the animal fat, it allows the wick to last much longer than if it were dry.
#8 Blow Darts
Blow guns were used for hunting purposes all throughout history. Due to its silent nature, the blow gun served as an excellent tool for hunting small game.
#9
Natural cotton was used in the past as the fletching for blow darts. Since tampons are made from cotton, they serve as excellent fletching.
#10 Animal Traps
While the string may not be that long, it can still be used as the cord for an animal trap.
#11 Blow Tube for Coal Burning
Water containers are hard to come by in the wilderness, so to improvise, using coals to burn a cavity into a stump or log is extremely useful. The applicator is used as a blow tube to intensify the coals and get them to burn through the wood to create the cavity.
#12 Waterproof Match and Tinder Case
Fires are pretty hard to start when all you have are wet matches. The tampon wrapper is waterproof so it can serve as a makeshift bag to house matches or tinder in. Once they're placed inside, just fold up the a few times and wrap the tampon string around it to seal it shut. Voila, dry matches!
#13 Fishing Bobber
Fishing with a hook and bobber is a classic. The bobber is made by folding over the top of the tampon package to create an air bubble. Once you've folded it, tie off the top with the tampon string and you're set. If worst comes to worst and you didn't tie it tight enough, throwing some of the cotton into the package will help it float. After that, tie the fishing line to it and wait.
