If your house was built sometime between the 1950s and the 1980s, chances are you're no stranger to popcorn ceilings. These unsightly ceilings go by many names, including cottage cheese and stucco ceilings, but most people know them as "popcorn" since they resemble the white, bursting kernels of everyone's favorite movie snack. They also look a lot like cottage cheese too, but that's one food you don't exactly want your ceilings compared to. So, if popcorn ceilings are at worst unsightly and at best out-of-date, why do so many houses still have them?

Many older homes and apartments still have these old school ceilings, but with time our preferences change, and sprucing up the place might mean getting rid of the retro ceiling. If you're looking to get rid of the ole' cottage cheese, Aaron Rollins provides a way for you to do it quickly and cleanly (no fancy tools necessary).

All you have to do is spray your popcorn ceiling with water. Grab a 6-inch spackle knife and duct tape it to the end of your shop vacuum. The spackle knife easily scrapes off the popcorn ceiling, while the vacuum quickly sucks in the debris. This will save you a whole lot of time and mess! Rollins says he was able to complete the entire room in less than 10 minutes with this technique.
