Tattoo artists use between 5 and 7 needles when working on a piece. It just depends on what portion of the tattoo is being worked on at that moment. If they are doing lines they tend to only need 5 but if they are shading, then 7 needles are needed.

The ink is injected directly in between the different layers of your skin. This is what causes a tattoo to be permanent. FOr instance, if you write on your arm with a magic marker, it only touches the epidermis. That is the outermost layer of your skin. That layer flakes off and is replaced by new skin regularly. In fact, around 70-80% of all dust in your home is actually your dead, flaked off skin.

Tattoos are injected into the dermis layer. That way they will never flake and fall off. Now you know why they are permanent but there is even more to learn.

Depending on where you get your tattoo done it can hurt. You may have heard that some areas are more painful than others when it comes to getting a tattoo and this is true. If you get a tattoo somewhere that doesn't have as much fat it tends to hurt more such as your rib cage or the top of your foot. Areas such as those have less fat protecting the muscles and veins. The chart below can help you determine where is most painful.

Since your skin is being pierced with a needle and a foreign substance is being placed inside you, you are susceptible to infection. Because of this, aftercare is important. If you don't take care of the tattoo site after it's finished you could end up in the hospital. Treat your new piece of work like you would any open wound. Clean it often and gently. Make sure your hands are clean when doing so and keep the area dry. You can see some common aftercare tips in the image below.
