Growing up in the late 90's, it felt like every single movie I watched dealt with one topic and one topic only.

"Losing your virginity".

You didn't necessarily need to lose it as soon as possible, but at the very least you had to make sure you weren't the last remaining virgin in your group of friends.

And if you've ever wondered what age people around the world lose their V-cards, no worries, Durex condoms actually conducted this study.

They surveyed people from 44 different countries around the world to find out at what age most people lose their virginity.

And UK residents, somewhat surprisingly, are among the latest to shed their V-plates.

The UK ranked 19th out of a possible 44, with Brits loosing their virginity at 18.3-years-old (a whole year older than Irish teens) which is almost precisely the age you're at during freshers week.

The eldest nation of youngsters to lose their virginity is Malaysia, where people tend not to have sex until turning 23-years-old, according to the study.

This could be due to a lack of sex education in the country's curriculum.

But what of the youngest nation, on average, to lose their virginity?

#4

It's Icelanders who are first to shoot out of the starting blocks. Your average Icelandic kid first has sex at 15.6-years-old.

In fact, Scandinavian countries have the top five spots or the bottom, whichever way you look at it in the study, which I can only assume is due to boredom as a consequence of the lack of daylight, causing almost 24/7 mood lighting.

Denmark's average age is 16.1, Sweden's 16.2 and Norwegian teens lose their virginities at 16.5-years-old, as do the Finnish.

The study goes someway to tackle stereotypes of certain nationalities, with Italians and the French who I've always thought of as a two particularly romantic nations deflowering each other later in life that us Brits.

Amusingly, American teens seem to jump into bed the second its legal, with the average American having sex for the first time at exactly 18 (which is the age of consent across the pond).

#6 Of course, we all knew there was no way Canada would defeat Australia, but it’s not really fair because they have accents.

We did however beat England which sort of proves the Australian accent is sexier than the British accent.

In the meantime, kids around the world will happily continue to amass the data.

#8 A chart reveals the average age people lose their virginity in different countries according to condom-makers Durex

Durex provided no explanation of how their decimal points system works in their 2012 study, but it would appear each 0.1 is equal to around one month and one week.
