#1 Why Being A Night Owl Is Not Good For You

A recent study done by the University of Barcelona has revealed that ‘morning people' and ‘night people' have very distinct personality traits. The early bird gets the worm?

#2 Early Birds Are Happier

According to the study, early birds tend to be happier. They are more resistant to fatigue and frustration, so they have lower levels of anxiety and depression. Unlike night owls, who are stressed, worn out, and can suffer from mental disorders.

#3 They Explore The Unknown More Than Usual

People who stay up later have a ‘higher tendency to explore the unknown.' They are also more likely to get hooked on drugs, alcohol, attempt suicide or develop mental disorders! They often suffer from nightmares and anxiety.

#4 Memory Loss Is A Given

Night owls do not score as high on tests if they are in school, and aren't as optimistic or alert as the early bird. Anything requiring memory becomes extremely difficult for those who lack sleep.

#5 In A State Of Constant mania

The night owl is not as good at working 9-5 or even being social during those hours! They often work hard and steadily as if in a manic state, due to lack of sleep. However, their work is normally not up to par.

#6 All Normal Daily Routines Are Thrown Out The Window

Daily routines are often ignored by night dwellers, and it's difficult for them to adjust to routine things like bathing, cooking, cleaning, and keeping themselves stable.

#7 It's Like Being In A Constant State Of Jet Lag

‘Evening-type subjects are well-known social jet lag sufferers, as they must develop a behavioral pattern in order to adapt to the social schedule,' one researcher explained. Most late nighters keep in a steady mania which helps them cope during the day.

#8 Their Biological Clock Is On daylight Savings Time

Social jet lag is explained as the lack of synchronisation between a person's biological clock, and society, which can throw a person off. Dropping out of the crowd and not following through with activities and things that you used to do is an example of someone who may be overly tired, and a night owl!

#9 Night Owls Are Easily Addicted To Drugs or Alcohol

Night owls can usually be addictive in personality. This includes drugs, alcohol, and mostly caffeine, which helps them cope with daily tasks.

#10 Coming Down With Various Illnesses

Tired people, or manic night owls have a weakened immune system, which means more time coughing, sneezing, and feeling achy. Late nighters get sick more often than those who have a daily routine, and often ache due to being tired. This causes the immune system to wear thin and lets viruses into your system easily. Maintaining a good ratio of 7-8 hours of sleep is good for your health.

#11 It Does Have a Few Benefits

But it isn't all bad for those night dwellers. Though the study shows that it's mostly good news for morning people and bad for night people, the night owls at least tend to be more creative. Dancers, artists, musicians, actors, writers, all seem to be at their best during the late night hours.

#12 All Is Not Lost On Night Owls

All you need to do is change your behavior. Check out a sleep study in your area, see a doctor about your problem, and try to tire yourself out as much as possible through exercise and work, so you can sleep through the night. Never watch TV or use a computer in bed, and try to sleep in a cool and dark room with little noise or distraction.
