The authors of the paper that was published in the British Medical Journal said that the woman was not wearing a proper helmet when this incident took place. When the scalping occurred, it took off the upper third of both ears and the top of her nose as well as her entire scalp.
Just hours after being admitted to the hospital, plastic surgeons were able to successfully reattach her scalp to the rest of her head. Since this was such a unique medical case, it was added to the BMJ as an example of a rare scalp avulsion which is a seriously complicated procedure because of all of the nerves and blood cells involved.

The doctors admitted this was only the second case of scalp avulsion ever performed in Japan. Sadly, there were a few things that they were not able to fix. The doctors were able to successfully reattach the blood vessels, but the left side remains blocked. She can only rely on blood flow from the right side of her face. Also, the surgeons were not able to reconnect the nerves to her scalp leaving her with no feeling on that part of her head.

Two weeks after her initial surgery, she had to have a skin graft because she had a lesion on the left side of her face causing her skin to die from lack of blood.

Despite those setbacks, she has been able to grow her hair back and she has regained some sensations around her temples. She has also gained control over her forehead muscles and can close both eyelids after just a year removed from the surgery.
She says she is very happy to look the way she does now after her surgeries and has no issues with her daily activities.
