The marriage of 16-year-old Selamet Riadi and 71-year-old Rohaya in a village in Ogan Komering Ulu, South Sumatra, was the talk of Indonesia last week, obviously due to their extraordinary age gap.

Despite receiving ridicule from many, Selamet and Rohaya continue to publicly express their great affection for each other (after all, they did threaten to commit suicide if their families did not give their blessings for their marriage).

After all the drama, their families agreed to let them get married. But it seems like Selamet’s idea of love is more than a little obsessive and misogynistic.

In Indonesia, the official minimum age of marriage is 16 for girls and 19 for boys. However, there is a special union called ‘nikah siri‘ that’s recognized by their religion but not by the state, Jakarta Coconuts reported.

The couple were married and went to Jakarta for their honeymoon.

As they settled into their married life, there were stories that the 16-year-old boy would lock up his wife in the house whenever he had to go out.

He claimed that he did this out of jealousy. He was afraid that other men might take away his 71-year-old wife.

“I locked her up because I’m scared that other men will enter the house when I’m off to buy noodles or cigarettes. But when I get home, I unlock the door.” “My jealousy is over the top. This is because I love her.” Doesn’t this count as abuse?

The 16-year-old boy is also said to be so clingy towards his wife. In fact, he sometimes skips going to the mosque for the Friday prayers that all Muslim men are expected to attend. The women are not supposed to be present in these prayers. A village leader had already told Selamet that no matter how he loves his wife, he still shouldn’t neglect his religious obligations.

Rohaya explained:

“I have reminded him to diligently pray. I told him to remember the village leader’s words. If it is Friday, then he must go to the mosque to fulfill his Friday prayers. He even invited me to go with him.”

For obvious reasons, Rohaya wasn’t interviewed at all about being locked up by her teenage husband. The 16-year-old even expressed that he wanted to have children with his 71-year-old wife.

He said,

“I want my daughter to be named Putri Permata Sari and my son to be named Andre Maulana.”

The reports don’t exactly say how the couple plans to do this. It was only noted that the old woman has already been rushed to the clinic several times due to exhaustion.

Whatever it is, locking your wife up when you’re away is definitely NOT the sign of a healthy relationship (on top of the insane age gap, of course). Please do not do this to your loved ones!
