"Oh my God! Harry! It's so nice to see you!" Anne exclaimed when she unexpectedly bumped into her old school friend on the street. She had left her five girls with her mother, taking a rare break for herself, and was on her way to grab a coffee in downtown Seattle.

"Anne, it's great to see you too! How about we grab some coffee and catch up?" Harry suggested, and she agreed right away.

They entered a nearby café, chatting casually until Harry asked about her family.

"Well… that's kind of a tough topic," Anne began, hesitating for a moment.

"Raising five kids can't be easy for anyone," Harry commented, already knowing a little about her life from social media.

"Matthew? What are you doing here?" she asked, looking at his uniform and the pretzel tray.

"Yeah, that's true, but it's more complicated than just that," Anne continued.

"Matthew changed after our twins were born. They're nine now, and they barely speak to their father. I think they're actually scared of him."

"Why? What happened?" Harry asked, looking genuinely concerned.

"Matthew always wanted a boy. We tried, but instead, we had two beautiful girls. We kept getting pregnant, hoping for a boy, but every time it was another girl. After our fifth daughter, he just… changed. He filed for divorce, and I honestly don't know what to do now," Anne explained, feeling the weight of her words.

"Wow, that sounds so tough. But maybe it's for the best? If he wasn't there for your older girls, maybe you’re already doing it all on your own anyway. You deserve better. If you ever need help, I'm here. You could even move in with me if you want," Harry offered sincerely.

Anne was taken aback by his generosity. They had only just reconnected after years apart, and she hadn’t expected such an offer, especially from someone who had once had a school crush on her. She changed the subject, feeling overwhelmed, and they continued talking about his life and career.

Meanwhile, life at home was getting worse by the day. Although they were in the process of divorcing, Matthew was still living in their house, acting like a carefree bachelor—throwing parties, making noise at all hours, waking the girls, and causing stress for everyone.

Anne frequently spoke with Harry, and his offer to help remained on the table. The breaking point came when Matthew brought another woman into their marital home. That was the last straw for Anne. She called Harry, packed her things, and left with her daughters.

The divorce battle became even more complex when Anne took Matthew to court, determined to keep their large house. Despite staying with Harry, she felt Matthew didn’t deserve the home. The judge ruled in her favor, awarding her the house and full custody of the kids due to Matthew’s reckless lifestyle.

As time passed, Anne and Harry fell in love. He bought a bigger home for their growing family, and when they moved in, she rented out her old house, no longer thinking about Matthew.

A year after marrying Harry, Anne gave birth to their son, Alan, the most beautiful boy, adored by his five big sisters. Anne had never felt happier or more fulfilled.

One day, after picking Alan up from preschool, Anne decided to stop by the mall to buy him new shoes. The girls were busy with their activities, so it was just her and Alan.

She never expected to run into Matthew, who was working at a pretzel stand, handing out free samples. Alan, full of energy, ran over to grab one.

"Alan, stay close to me!" she called after him, only to lock eyes with Matthew, who looked just as surprised.

"Anne?"

"Matthew? What are you doing here?" she asked, noticing his uniform and the tray of pretzels. Matthew had once worked in an office, earning a good salary. He was supposed to pay child support but never did, and Anne hadn’t pressed him since she had enough. But working a minimum-wage job at the mall didn’t make sense for him.

"I'm working here," he responded, glancing down at Alan, who was happily eating his pretzel. "Is this your son?"

"Yes, this is Alan," she replied with pride. "He's Harry's son."

"Oh, nice to meet you, Alan," Matthew said, looking awkwardly at the child. Of course, Anne knew it wasn’t her fault she hadn’t given him a boy before. Everyone knew it was the man’s DNA that determined a baby’s gender. Yet, Matthew had blamed her for years and disconnected from their marriage over it. Now, looking at him, it was clear he had thrown away everything for a ridiculous reason.

Luckily, Harry had stepped in to be the father figure her daughters needed, and Anne didn’t need Matthew anymore.

"Anne, I didn’t want to ask like this, but… I’ve hit rock bottom. I lost everything because of my choices, and I was hoping we could sell our old house," Matthew asked, his voice full of shame.

"Oh… well, it’s rented out right now, but I’ll think about it," Anne said, wanting to end the conversation. "We have to go now. I’ll let you know about the house."

She grabbed Alan’s hand and walked away, knowing Matthew had no idea what he had lost. In the end, Anne sold the house and gave him half of the proceeds, even though she was entitled to keep it all. Something inside her just felt it was the right thing to do.

Matthew eventually asked to reconnect with the girls, but none of them wanted to see him. The twins, now teenagers, resented him deeply, and the younger ones followed their example. After a while, he stopped trying, and they never heard from him again. For them, he was no longer family.
