A man who wanted a sexual relationship with a lady threatened to sue her for emotional trauma when he learned that she just considered him a friend. He sued her twice after she cut off contact with him.
Man Who Got Friendzoned By Woman Sues Her For $3m Over ‘Trauma’
A man has filed two lawsuits in Singapore against a woman for emotional trauma after she rejected him and admitted she only saw him as a friend, as well as for neglecting to repair their relationship following the rejection.
The $3 million High Court case filed by K. Kawshigan accuses him of having suffered "trauma, depression, and impacts" on his life in addition to "damage to his stellar reputation."
A $22,000 magistrate's court claim for allegedly breaking a promise to mend their relationship is filed in the second lawsuit.
According to a ruling released on January 28th, deputy registrar Lewis Tan dismissed the $22,000 complaint, stating that Kawshigan's claim was "manifestly groundless and without foundation."
Per The Strait Times, Tan said:
“Considered in totality, I find that the present action was intentionally initiated by the claimant with the ulterior motive of vexing or oppressing the defendant by requiring her to defend various claims that fundamentally stem from the same factual matrix in different forums.”
“This court will not be an accessory to his calculated attempt to compel engagement from the defendant who, after years of massaging the claimant’s unhappiness, has finally decided to stand up to his threats rather than cower and give in to his demands.”
The woman, Nora Tan Shu Mei, and Kawshigan first spoke in a social setting in 2016, the court said. Over time, they became friends, but issues started to emerge around September 2020 when they 'became misaligned about how they saw their relationship,' according to the report.
Tan thought of Kawshigan as a buddy, but she was his "closest friend," according to Kawshigan. Tan subsequently requested that their interactions be minimized. This infuriated Kawshigan since he thought it implied that their relationship was going backward. She emphasized the importance of boundaries, though, and advised him to be "self-reliant."
Tan made an effort to persuade Kawshigan. In a text message, she assured him that her "discomfort is genuine."
She could either submit to his requests to intensify their relationship or suffer "irrevocable" harm to her personal and professional endeavors, he replied, adding that "our discomfort is as fake as the cause."
The interactions between the two are detailed in the judgment:
Kawshigan said:
“Don't you get it? I don't care about you anymore from here on. From now on, you are the Respondent and I am the Claimant. And emotionally, till the day I die, you are the cause of my trauma.”
Tan replied:
“I have heard this before.”
Kawshigan said:
“...we will talk again once every single person disproves you. And you find that you were wrong about me. And that you truly hurt me.”
Kawshigan responded when Ms. Tan questioned what she had been mistaken about:
“Get lost. See you in court. I won't go into battle without the aim of winning, especially if I am right.”
Tan was subsequently asked to take part in their sessions by Kawshigan's therapist, and she consented because she believed that doing so would aid Kawshigan in accepting her decision not to pursue a romantic relationship with him. However, she realized the sessions were useless after a year and a half.
Tan made the decision to stop communicating with him on May 14. He then filed a High Court claim against her on July 7 and a magistrate's court claim on August 27 alleging that she had broken their agreement to mend their relationship.
The pre-trial hearing for the $3 million High Court claim is scheduled for February 9th.
