Do you wear clothes you just bought without washing them first? Most people do it all the time, but you probably won't after you read this scary report. Eeewww!
Most People Don’t Wash New Clothes Before Wearing Them And That's A Disgusting Mistake
#1 As The Seasons Change So Do Our Wardrobes
I have always thought that when I buy new clothes and it is perfectly packaged that this clothing is absolutely clean and sanitary and ready to put right on and wear. But I will definitely think twice from now on after hearing about this report done by Harrisburg PA channel CBS 21.
#2 They Decided To Test Clothing For Bacteria
The station decided to take some new and used clothing items, as well as a new and used pair of shoes and an unopened package of underwear, to a lab to be tested for bacteria. What they discovered is shocking.
#3 Every Item Tested Was Found To Have Bacterial Growth
If you've never put too much thought into how sanitary your new items are, these findings might be a bit disturbing for you. Every item that was tested had bacteria of some type, and that also includes the sealed package of brand new female underwear.
#4 The Only Thing Clean Was A Pair Of Thrift Store Shoes
Ironically, the only thing that didn't test positive for bacteria were some second-hand shoes from the thrift shop. The scientist was actually dismayed at the discovery of the unusual bacteria found in the underwear, as it was not similar in any way to the other findings of common growths on clothing or wearables.
#5 People Try Clothes On And Leave Their Germs With Them
Clothing items are handled and tried on by different people at stores. That's why experts recommend washing new items with hot water and even bleach before wearing them for the first time. Some items, like pants or even coats or shirts, are put right back on the shelf after someone has returned them.
#6 Sanitize And Wash Everything If Possible
Sanitizing shoes is much easier than clothing since a lot of newer materials suggest washing in cold water or without bleaching. For shoes, you can easily just wipe the inside with an antibacterial product on a cloth.
#7 Manufacturers Add Chemicals To New Clothing To Prevent Wrinkling And Mold That Is Harmful To Your Skin
But bacteria is not the only thing you should be concerned about: clothing manufacturers use formaldehyde to prevent bacteria growth in clothes. Dye and formaldehyde resin are the two most common chemicals found in new clothing and these are both skin irritants. The reason these chemicals are used is to prevent wrinkling and mildew. And not just in the U.S. but globally, which means that just about every type of clothing is affected, so getting rid of those chemicals first by washing your new clothes wouldn't be a bad idea.
