There are hundreds of misconceptions about getting pregnant and having a baby, like the stork dropping a child off at your home when it's due date has arrived. Fortunately, we can rule that one out easily, but there are plenty of other misconceptions and myths to go around.
#1 Mountain Dew
There has been a myth floating around for a dozen years or more that drinking lots of Moutain Dew soda can lower a man's sperm count. Therefore, he can't get a girl pregnant. The coloring dye used in Mountain Dew, Yellow #5, is said to make men have a slightly lowered sperm count, but this is totally false. Even if a man drinks ten gallons of the soda every day, the only thing that will happen is that he'll get a big fat gut. He will, however, still be able to get a girl pregnant, if he can find a girl with that big belly he now has.
#2 Hot Tub
One big misconception about getting pregnant is that sex in a hot tub kills the sperm. While having a good time in a hot tub can be very fun, it won't stop you from getting pregnant. Many believe that the chlorine and the extreme rotation of hot water can kill the sperm, which is true. But, it won't kill the sperm already inside the body, and it's able to connect with an egg and start forming a baby!
#3 Two Condoms
Many guys think that if one is good, then two must be better. They couldn't be more wrong. In actuality, two condoms increase the friction between the condoms. This friction then can lead to the rupture of both of the condoms, causing sperm to leak through. There have been many documented cases of the top condom coming off inside the woman's vagina, causing severe health issues.
#4 Douching
Another very popular belief that is totally incorrect. Many women think that if they wash the sperm out, then there is no way they can get pregnant. Wrong. You can rinse out some residue but by douching you force the sperm up further into the vagina closer to the cervix, making it easier to become pregnant. You need to keep your mimsy clean, but don't expect it to keep the stork away.
#5 First Time
Some naive teens and even adults believe that just because it's their first time having sex, they can't possibly get pregnant. This is right and wrong. If the girl has not begun her menstrual cycle, she can't get pregnant that first time. After that, she can. However, once she has started her monthly cycles, she can get pregnant whether it's her first time having sex or her tenth.
#6 Jumping Jacks
Though they are good for your health, doing jumping jacks after having intercourse is not going to stop the sperm from fertilizing an egg. This is one of the craziest myths about conception ever, and it's believed to be true by hundreds of thousands of young girls. Jump up and down all you want, but sperm does not fall out, they stay inside and keep swimming. As long as they are anywhere near the vagina, sperm is capable of finding an egg to fertilize.
#7 During Menstruation
Many people have the misconception that if a woman has her period, then she can't get pregnant. They believe that she won't become pregnant because she just finished her cycle and will not be ovulating for a couple of weeks. This is false. She can get pregnant, but it depends on how long her cycle lasts and how close she is to the end of it. So, while it is rare, she can get pregnant even while on her monthly cycle.
#8 Rhythm Method
The rhythm method is a method of birth control that involves the careful mapping of a woman's monthly cycle. The belief is that if you avoid intercourse during the days of ovulation, you can avoid pregnancy. However, sperm can live for 3 to 5 days in a woman's vagina, and ovulation is not always set on the same day from month to month. The rhythm method by itself only has a 35% success rate.
#9 Girl On Top
While it's a good way to have sex, it's totally not a way to keep from becoming pregnant. The popular belief is that if you have sex with the woman on top, she can not become pregnant because gravity will simply make the sperm fall out or render them incapable of swimming upward. Sperm, however, is very capable little guys, and can just as easily swim up with the girl on top as in any other position. Once inside they start swimming, no matter what positions you do the funky bump in.
#10 The Pull Out
This one is a guy's favorite myth. They believe that if they "pull out" before or during ejaculating, that no sperm has entered the vagina. However, there is a pre-ejaculatory fluid that comes out before a man has ejaculated and this fluid can contain sperm. This sperm can then proceed into the uterus, and if they meet with an ova, a baby can be made. A lot of guys say 'trust me; I pull out' as though they can't possibly get the girl pregnant. Sorry fellas, this myth, is now debunked!
#11 Oral Sex
Many girls and women believe that is they give oral sex instead of intercourse; they can't get pregnant. This isn't a myth; it's true. And while getting pregnant isn't a possibility with oral sex, getting a sexually transmitted disease, such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, warts, herpes, or HIV, is. To avoid pregnancy and STDs, always remember to use a condom every time a sexual contact occurs, including oral, vaginal, or anal sex.
