This woman took to Reddit to share her dilemma of calling off her neighbor for calling her a squatter and calling the police on her and not believing that she is the new owner of the house. Even though she was in the right in this situation, OP says that her dad told her she did wrong for making enemies with her neighbor. However, majority on Reddit assured the young woman that she did right and even if she went the other way around the outcome would have been the same.
Neighbour Calls Police On Woman Because She Looks 'Too Young' To Own A Property
This young woman recently took to Reddit to share how her new neighbor accused her and called police upon her just because she looks too young to own a house.
Reddit user writes that her neighbor initially blasted her for painting someone else's home and not getting permission from the owner. However, when she was told that she owns the house and she was mocked and told that she looks too young to own the property.
When the neighbor demanded proof of her home ownership, the young woman politely told her to mind her own business.
The 20-year-old took to the Am I the A**hole subreddit to seek outsider opinions on whether she is in the wrong for refusing to show her neighbor her deeds to the property.
OP explained her post that the house cost her only $15,000 and all she had to do was to get the roof fixed and do minor changes to the kitchen such as replacing the cabinets.
The home previously belonged to an older man who passed away before she moved in two months ago.
Her new neighbor “Jane”, a woman in her 50s, introduced herself to the Redditor three weeks after she moved in.
They had a cool conversation on how the new homeowner was preparing her yard for the spring season with Jane telling her it is “nice that someone is doing some work for the old man”.
Jane then went on to say that it’s a quiet neighborhood and that she shouldn’t have any parties. However, the young woman informed Jane that she soon plan to throw a housewarming and a Thanksgiving party with Jane pointing out that it is weird to throw this party since she is only renting the place.
“I told her I own the house,” the woman wrote. “She didn’t believe me, but went home.”
The situation only got bad a few days back when the OP was painting her front door.
She explained: “[Jane] stormed over yelling that I better have permission to paint someone else’s house. I again told her I own my home. She started yelling that I was too young to buy a house and she was contacting my landlord. I told her to stop being a busybody and leave me alone. She started demanding proof. I told her it was none of her business and to get off my property.”
Jane allegedly then walked to the edge of the young woman’s yard and called the police, telling them she was a squatter. When the police arrived, she showed them her paperwork. “Jane is still angry,” she said.
OP says the next day she talked to her dad to ask if she did right and her dad told her she was an “a**” for “making enemies with [her] neighbours” and said she should have just shown Jane her paperwork to put an end to the matter.
OP thinks she handled the matter right but her father thinks she could have done a better job.
The majority on Reddit supported the OP and called out her dad for not supporting her
Redditors responded to the anonymous post and labeled the OP NTA. Majority called Jane a jealous neighbor and the dad an inconsiderate man for having no sympathy with the daughter.
One person made the valid point that showing her the deed probably wouldn’t have worked anyway: “Even if you showed her the deed, the way you painted her, she probably would’ve claimed the deed was fake.”
A different user said that, regardless, being 20 years old means neighbours were probably not going to be thrilled to see you move in beside them, deed or no deed. They added: “Misery, jealousy and envy love company so be on the lookout for the Real Housewives of your neighbourhood posse she tries to put together.”
Some were even curious as to how OP got a property at such a cheap rate while few pointed out the downside of having a property with Jane as the neighbor.
Another Redditor replied to say the tradeoff for such cheap property is living in the “middle of f***town nowhere” where you have to drive an hour for groceries, medical care, or to go to work. “Also, you have Janes for neighbours,” they wrote.
