The bathroom seems to be the center of our morning routine. You may think you have very good cleaning habits and believe that this room is exceptionally clean and immaculate.Even though you have every reason to believe this, it’s important to remember that this area of the house harbors bacteria and dangerous toxins.
Maybe since childhood you’ve had the habit of leaving your toothbrush in the bathroom because it seems more practical, but it’s not a good idea for your health.
#1 Bar soap
Bars of soap are often messy, whether they're kept on the sink or in a soap dish. Plus, just because soap is soap, it doesn't mean that it won't get contaminated when you pick it up with your dirty hands!
Opt for a liquid soap dispenser, which will cut back on the mess and is also a lot more hygienic to pump out.
#2 Perfume
From first spray, your favorite eau de toilette starts to gradually degenerate (blame it on oxidation). Exposure to heat and humidity speeds up the process by destroying the molecular integrity and causing your scent to spoil more quickly,
#3 Condoms
Apologies for getting so personal, but if you use condoms, it matters where you store them in your home. If you tuck them away discreetly in your medicine cabinet, you may be messing with their effectiveness.
Research from Planned Parenthood found that condoms can degrade when stored in warm, moisture prone environments for over a month, like your bathroom. Yes, even if you keep them tucked away in a medicine cabinet or your car’s glove box, they may become damaged due to heat.
#4 Jewelry
If you love your jewelry at all you will not keep it in the bathroom. The environment will cause your jewelry to tarnish faster than when kept in a dry climate.
#5 Books and magazines
Who doesn't love reading a good book in the bath or, let's be honest now, flicking through a magazine whilst sat on the toilet? We ALL do it, but don't store your favourite tomes in the bathroom, as the moisture will affect the bindings and pages, causing irreversible damage. Quick! rescue your first editions!
#6 Medicines
What, no medication in the bathroom? But it's called a "medicine cabinet"!
Well you should keep all your medicine in a cool, dry place---and the bathroom usually isn't cool or dry, especially when you have ventilation problems.
Heat and humidity can damage your medicine and reduce its effectiveness, or make it go bad before its best-by date. Yes, even typical over-the-counter medication like acetaminophen are damaged by the hot and humid environment of your bathroom.
The alternative? Store your pills in your bedroom in a dresser drawer, in a closer, or in the kitchen far from the stove, the sink, the fridge, or any other heat or humidity source.
#7 Toothbrush
People usually keep toothbrush in bathroom right next to the toothpaste. But shockingly, this is the very worst place to keep it, for two reasons. Firstly, if your toothbrush is left out in the open, it is vulnerable to attack from all the terrible particles expelled from your toilet once flushed. Secondly, the bathroom’s humidity makes your toothbrush a super breeding-spot for bacteria to flourish.
Instead why not keep your toothbrush in a cooler, darker place. Perhaps your bedroom. And always replace your brush every 3-4
#8 Extra Razor
By all means keep your current razor in the shower or cabinet, but take the rest into another room. The moisture and steam from the shower could rust the blades before you get the chance to use them.
#9 Towel
I guess it makes a lot of sense to store and hang towels inside your bathroom. After all, it is where you shower and wash your hands. However, don’t do it. Towels’ fabric is very absorbent and can keep moisture for a long time.
Moisture that can help in the growth of mildew, mold and bacteria. You can hang towels outside your bathroom on the wall next to it so they can be aired quickly.
#10 Electronics
Non-water-resistant electronics and cables do not belong in the bathroom. Even though the bathroom scale, hair dryer and electric shaver certainly seem to belong in your bathroom storage, it's not a good idea to permanently keep non-water-resistant electronics in a humid environment. Otherwise you'll risk your things breaking far quicker than if you had stored them in a dry place.
