The parents had been celebrating their daughter’s fourth birthday just hours before the tragedy.
A young girl in Brazil turned four on the same day she tragically lost both of her parents. They were found dead inside a hotel bathtub after what was meant to be a night of celebration.
Her father, 37-year-old military police officer Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, and her mother, 41-year-old nail salon owner Ana Carolina Silva, had spent the day at a food park, eating, drinking, and enjoying time with loved ones to mark their daughter’s birthday.
Later that evening, the couple decided to continue the celebration by going out to a club. They left their daughter in the care of Jeferson’s sister while they went out for the night.
Shortly after midnight on August 11, the couple checked into the Dallas Motel in São José, Brazil, reportedly planning to stay the night after their evening out. The room included a large bathtub, which the couple appeared to have used before tragedy struck.
When they didn’t return home the next morning to collect their daughter, relatives became alarmed and contacted local authorities. Police began investigating immediately and traced their last known location to the motel.
When officers arrived, they found both Jeferson and Ana lifeless inside the bathroom, confirming the family’s worst fears.

Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the motel and determined that the pair had passed out while sitting in a bathtub filled with water heated to around 122°F (50°C).
A toxicology report later confirmed the presence of high amounts of alcohol and traces of cocaine in their bloodstreams, according to the news outlet Globo G1.
Chief Medical Examiner Andressa Boer Fronza stated: "The cause of both deaths was exogenous poisoning, favouring the process of heatstroke with intense dehydration, thermal collapse, culminating in organ failure and death."
"In other words, this death occurred due to multifactorial conditions."
Investigators conducted sixteen different forensic tests to rule out other possible causes of death, including drowning, electrical malfunction, carbon monoxide poisoning, and foul play.
After confirming that a space heater had been running in the bathroom, they concluded that the couple’s deaths were caused by extreme heat exposure and dehydration.

"It may be that the physical constitution, both his and hers, were not compatible with the use of a substance like that, especially when combined with alcohol," Chief Simão explained when discussing the findings.
He continued: "The big issue raised in the statements we took, talking to people involved in this, is that they did not have the habit of using cocaine."
The couple’s four-year-old daughter is now being cared for by relatives as the family grieves the devastating loss.
