The skies will go dark on Friday due to a phenomenon called a black moon.

But if you believe the ominous predictions currently doing the rounds online, the light of human civilisation will go dark soon afterwards.

Conspiracy theorists, religious zealots and honest-to-goodness weirdos are once again claiming that the end of the world is nigh.

Friday's black moon comes just before a Jewish festival called The Feast of Trumpets which, of course, has prompted doom-mongers to claim we're all about to die.

Although most of the apocalypse aficionados agree that it's game over for humanity, they differ on exactly how we will meet our grim fate.

On YouTube, one (presumably nervous) vlogger said the black moon was linked to Hecate, Queen of the Underworld and Greek goddess of the moon, witchcraft and ghosts.

"She comes to Earth every 200 years to find an innocent man from a well born family and puts him under her spell in order to create a demonic spawn," he said.

This demon baby would then wreak havoc on the planet.

That's not a very nice turn of events, we're sure you agree, but the creation of a demonic bambino pales into insignificance compared to another conspiracy theorist's prediction, which was posted on Facebook.

He wrote: "Those signs are letting us know that Jesus is soon coming. We are approaching the end of our world and the end of life on Earth for all human being.

"Every day, we have to come closer to our saviour Jesus Christ. For none can escape for what is coming for the Earth."

This cheery prophecy is given added weight by the fact a "Ring of Fire" moon appeared in the skies earlier this month.

Naturally, The Bible has an ominous warning about what happens at times such as these.

Turn to Luke 21:25-26 and you'll find the words: "There shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men's hearts failing them for fear, and looking after those things which are coming on the earth."

For a bit more explanation about what this might mean, we turned to the website Now The End Begins, a page which truly does exactly what it says on the tin.

It wrote: "We have been getting closer and closer to the end of time.

"The signs, as you can see from this site, are getting stronger and we are sure to see Jesus return soon."

See you on the other side or Monday morning, as it's otherwise known.

#8 What is a black moon? Your guide to this rare celestial event

In rare circumstances, the moon is illuminated by the Earth's shadow, making it almost impossible to see.

The dark cast that falls over the celestial body is why the event has become known as a Black Moon.

As a Black Moon only ever occurs when there are two new moons in the same month, the unusual phenomenon only appears every 32 months.

Depending on where you live in the world, the Black Moon can be witnessed at different times of the year.

This week, it can be observed in the skies of the Western Hemisphere.

In the UK, it can be seen at around 1.10AM on Saturday morning, whereas it will reach its peak in the US at around 8PM on Friday.

Those on the other side of the world will have to wait until next month to spot the Black Moon, which eerily coincides around the time of Halloween.
