A gun and loaded magazine were found inside the desk of a second-grade student at a south Sacramento elementary school, a district spokesperson said Tuesday.

Students at Edward Kemble Elementary, which is located in the Meadowview neighborhood, notified staff that one of their classmates brought a gun to school, said Al Goldberg, a communications manager with the Sacramento City Unified School District.

Goldberg said police were immediately called to the scene and secured the weapon.

“It is our promise to you that we will do all that we can to learn from today’s experience so that we can keep your child and our schools safe,” the district said in a message to families after the incident.

The incident happened on the same day 19 students and two adults were killed in a Texas elementary school shooting. The attack was the deadliest shooting at a US grade school since a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, almost a decade ago.

Thankfully, the student’s classmates made school staff aware that the gun and the loaded magazine were in the student’s desk, and they were able to confiscate it.

“We are grateful that this incident did not result in a tragedy such as those that districts have experienced, including today’s tragic and senseless mass shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas. This is due in large part to the bravery and awareness of the students who came forward and alerted staff at Kemble today.”

But that’s not the first incident with a gun at a school this week.

In a separate incident, Roseville police said they arrested a high school student this week for having a list of students he potentially wanted to hurt at school.

“This is an excellent example of someone seeing hearing suspicious activity and reporting it so that it can be investigated,” Officer Rob Baquera said.

Biden spoke Tuesday night from the White House barely an hour after returning from a five-day trip to Asia that was bracketed by mass shootings in the U.S. He pleaded for action to address gun violence after years of failure — and bitterly blamed firearm manufacturers and their supporters for blocking legislation in Washington.

’“When in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby?” Biden said with emotion. “Why are we willing to live with this carnage? Why do we keep letting this happen?”

With first lady Jill Biden standing by his side in the Roosevelt Room, the president, who has suffered the loss of two of his own children — though not to gun violence — spoke in visceral terms about the grief of the loved ones of the victims and the pain that will endure for the students who survived.

“To lose a child is like having a piece of your soul ripped away,” Biden said. “There’s a hollowness in your chest. You feel like you’re being sucked into it and never going to be able to get out.”

He called on the nation to hold the victims and families in prayer — but also to work harder to prevent the next tragedy, “It’s time we turned this pain into action,” he said.
