When we go on vacation or any kind of trip, we make sure that we bring our camera. You can't forget the camera. Our cameras let us relive our memories and hold on to the best and most exciting moments. But what if you lost your camera? What if you lost every picture you had taken and were never able to look back on a trip you took? One young woman had just that happen to her, except she lost hers in the waters of Cuba.
She Lost Her Camera At The Beach, But A Diver Found It. Then He Tracks Her Down On Facebook!
#1 Emily Demello from Vancouver was on vacation in Varadero, Cuba in January 2012.
She was staying at a resort with her friends, Madisen Singer and Hailey Olson. Her dad had given her a shockproof, waterproof camera because Emily is very clumsy. Her dad joked the camera was "Emily-proof".
#2 Three days into the trip, Emily was taking pictures in the ocean.
She was hit by a large wave, and the camera was knocked from her hand. "We looked for the camera for about 20 minutes, walking around the area in the water and walking along the beach. As soon as it was gone the current must have taken it away, though."
#3 The camera had about 100 photos and videos on it.
"It was disappointing that I still managed to lose the camera, even with all of its safety features. We did have other cameras but had lots of video diary footage on my camera that we had been taking since the trip began."
#4 Two years had passed since Emily had seen her camera.
But that's when a professional diver named Ruben Urquiza comes in.
#5 Two years later while diving, Ruben found Emily's camera.
It was spotted off the coast of Varadero. It was very damaged, but the memory card seemed to be okay. He downloaded the pictures and found a photo of Emily's boarding pass with her name on it. Ruben found her on Facebook and sent her this message, "Hi Emily, I am from Cuba, my name is Ruben. I know that you [were] in my country in 2012 because I am [a] diver in Varadero and I found your camera in the beach, please accept me in your Facebook friends and I will send you your pictures! I am sorry [for] my bad English, have a nice Sunday!"
#6 Emily says at first she thought it was a random friend request but became excited as soon as she read the message.
"I ran downstairs right away to tell my family what happened. I think it's an amazing story it really seems like it's something out of a movie."
#7 When Emily thought her camera and memories were lost forever, an unexpected diver and some very big luck turned things around.
"There are people like Ruben, doing great things everywhere. It means a lot that he took the time to find me and send my pictures back to me. Nothing stays lost forever."
