Because of the fact that we spend about 1/3 of our lives in bed, keeping the sheets and blankets clean on a regular basis is often a necessary chore, but what about taking care of our mattresses?

Chances are, you may rotate your mattress a few times per year, which should extend the shelf-life of your bed, but how often do you actually clean your mattress? The average person will do this maybe once or twice a year (or not at all), and you may be shocked to find out how much filth you're accumulating on an annual basis, and remember, this is where you sleep!

Melissa Maker of Clean My Space sheds some light on how much we shed in our beds while we sleep, and it may rattle your cage a little. She tells us that the average person perspires about a half-pint every night, which can soak through your sheets and into your mattress; and not only that, we also shed approximately a pound-and-a-half of skin on an annual basis. When combined with occasional spills and wear-and-tear from pets, your mattress can take a dirty beating.

In this video clip, Melissa shows us how to vacuum our mattresses with an upholstery tool before sprinkling baking soda (a natural deodorizer) across the surface of the bed. After about 30 minutes, vacuum the surface and voila! That certain musty aroma that used to emanate from your mattress should be virtually nonexistent. Melissa also offers other tips on how to keep your space clean and smelling fresh. You may sleep better after following these simple instructions, and she also offers tips on how to remove stains as well. Sweet dreams!
