A prisoner has been filmed biting off a pigeon's head as part of a gruesome stunt to get his hands on some drugs.

The sickening video - recorded illegally on a mobile phone from inside jail - shows the inmate pulling the animal from a plastic bag in front of a jeering crowd.

He then beheads the bird in one fell swoop, by sinking his teeth into the bird's neck and ripping the animal in two.

The prisoner then spits the head back into the bag, before triumphantly holding up the remains of the helpless animal.

The stunt took place in what appears to be a gymnasium - complete with a table tennis table - at HMP Onley in Northamptonshire, a Catergory C prison with more than 700 inmates.

After the shocking event, another prison - who recorded the incident on his mobile phone - says in disbelief: 'He's just bit a pigeon's head off.'

The shameful clip - reportedly a dare so the jailmate could get some drugs - is yet another example of the lawlessness in prisons.

Our insider told The Sun: 'It's all part of a growing culture where prisoners get each other to do shocking things in exchange for illegal drugs.

'It started off with dares like punching other inmates, but this pigeon-eating challenge is off the scale. It's sick and needs to be stopped.'

An RSPCA spokesman told MailOnline that the organisation was 'horrified' by the video.

'It's not clear from the footage whether the bird is dead before the incident or whether it is still alive but it's very distressing to watch,' they said.

'We would like to remind the public that, under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, it's an offence to cause unnecessary suffering to any animal.'

Prisoners are banned from having drugs in jail but they are often smuggled into jails after being concealed in juice cartons, tennis balls and shampoo bottles.

A Prison Service spokesman said: 'The incident was investigated immediately and swift action has already been taken.

'It is a criminal offence to bring a mobile phone into prison or transmit sounds or images from within a prison using a mobile phone, and anyone convicted can face up to two years in prison.

'Prisons use a range of measures to detect and block mobiles and we are bringing in legislation allowing us to apply for a court order to compel network operators to disconnect mobile phones in prisons.'

The footage is one of a string of videos which have been emerged recently from behind bars.

Earlier this year, a Facebook page called HMP TV was set up and featured thousands of videos recorded from inside jail, including prisoners scrapping in bare-knuckle fights.

One clip showed two inmates squaring off in a brutal fist fight in HMP Rochester, Kent, that leaves one of the men covered in blood.

A separate video, which came to light in March, showed a young prisoner being humiliated by inmates in HMP Brixton in London as he cries and pleads for help. It is captioned on the Facebook page as 'this guy gets himself in some bad situations lol'.

Another shocking video uncovered in May showed convicted murderer John 'Boy' Ward and his friend filming themselves joking around at HMP Swaleside on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent.

The video shows the killer - who is serving a minimum 32 year sentence for killing his cousin - laughing with his friend before he says: 'When I get out, you're going to be terrorised.'
