Emergency personnel exchanged a harrowing call after hearing about a man being mauled by a big white shark off the coast of California.

The call handler was heard telling paramedics: "We're getting reports that somebody has been attacked by a shark."

To which, they responded, "Affirmative we are with the patient now" as the commotion of the incident was heard in the background in the clip which was broadcast on ABC News.

Later it was discovered that Steve Bruemmer, a swimmer, had suffered "severe injuries" as a result of the marine beast's attack on him on June 22 at about 10.30 am at Lovers Point Beach in Monterey Bay, California, according to Ocean Grove Police Department.

Three courageous surfers who could be seen on footage of the incident pulled the retired IT specialist to safety using their paddle boards.

Paul Bandy, a Sacramento police officer, and his nurse wife Aimee Johns were among the heroes who came to live-action when they heard witnesses screaming and saw the man in need.

Bandy told KSBW: "He was screaming for help, you could tell the sound and the emotion in his voice that there was something wrong and he was slapping the water.

"I wasn’t sure if that was some sort of thing he was trying to get something away from him or just trying to draw attention to himself.”

"As soon as we got close to him, we could see he had severe lacerations on his arms and legs."

As they dragged the man from the water, Johns claimed that he was "severely bleeding" from his abdomen and that his leg was almost severed.

When Heath Braddock, a local, saw the commotion while instructing kids to surf nearby, he took his class back on shore and "grabbed a couple of boards and took two boards out."

He said he "saw kind of the pool of blood. It was probably the size of a table or a car" before the three good samaritans managed to put the victim on the board and get him to shore for emergency care.

“We got my biggest board and the gentleman, Paul, helped me roll the victim on the board belly down and got him kind of centered and stable. We had him hold my food and we paddled him in,” Braddock added

American Medical Response took the sufferer to Natividad Hospital to receive treatment for his "significant injuries".

A statement from Pacific Grove officers added: "We want to express our gratitude and appreciation to the good Samaritans that took immediate action and personal risk to assist the swimmer. We send our prayers and thoughts to the swimmer and their family.”

After the attack, a firefighter drone was used to try to find the shark; according to Pacific Grove city manager Ben Harvey, the drone did find it, but there have been no subsequent sightings.
