The National Fire Protection Association put out a public service YouTube video, that you are about to watch below. It will alert everyone to the dangers of a live tree, if it is not properly watered on a daily basis.

Trees dry out very quickly once they have been cut down, and proximity to heat sources and unsafe electrical connections of tree lights can cause a tree to be in full flames within six seconds. The following footage demonstrates how this occurs, and how unbelievably quickly it can destroy a house and potentially cause loss of lives.

Key to safety is to be sure the tree you buy is fresh; the less fresh the tree the higher the potential for dryness which leads to fires. Taking proper precautions with regard to electrical safety and being many feet from a heat source, and unplugging the tree when it is unattended are good for starters.
