It's pretty common.

The alarming video is pretty creepy but there really isn't any reason to freak out. This is a pretty common phenomenon with seafood that has been seen many times before. Remember when the video of this squid freaked out the internet?

It's caused by chemical reactions.

The jerking and jumping that you see if all due to a chemical reaction. The fish is absolutely dead but due to the chemicals reacting its muscles are stimulated.

It's all about muscle stimulation.

The flopping fish doesn't actually feel any pain at all. The remaining tissues of its brain are long dead. After a fresh kill, the muscle tissue lives on for a little while. This means that even after death a fish can still move if its muscles are stimulated.

Science is amazing.

Even without a functioning brain, muscle tissue will still actively respond to stimulation. With fresh kills, the voltages that exist inside of all nerve cells remain intact for a while. Muscle tissue remains alive and can react.

Salt is the catalyst.

Salt is most likely the cause of the fish in the video reacting the way it does. As we have seen in other videos like this, items with a high salt content, soy sauce, for example, will be absorbed by the muscle tissue and cause the voltages in the nerves to change which causes the muscles to spasm.

So there you have it.

It's nothing creepy about it at all. No zombies. Just salt. Soon the fish would stop flopping and be ready to cook up into a yummy meal.
