Lightbulbs seem fairly interesting when you look at them. Their graceful, organic shapes and delicate glass structures are actually quite lovely, which is why it doesn't feel great to simply toss them in the garbage when they stop emitting light. Isn't there anything else we can do with them?
A group of intrepid DIYers recently compiled this list of cool ways to recycle old lightbulbs into fabulous projects. Some of these projects can be made at home, while some are being created by professionals and can be purchased online. If you're thinking of trying these, please remember that lightbulbs are usually made with thin glass, and you should always take the proper precautions when handling them.
#1 Hanging vases
Hanging vases make a cool statement in a window. Experiment with colored lightbulbs, too!
#2 Air plant terrariums
A bulb with a modification like this one is best purchased from someone who knows the ins and outs of glassworking. Don't try this at home unless you're a trained expert.
#3 Aquariums
You can also fill the bulbs with water for aquatic plants and other materials. This creates a more permanent display than just a vase. They'll be a bit heavier, so plan accordingly.
#4 Enclosed terrarium
Instead of leaving the top open, you can seal it to create an entirely self-sustaining ecosystem. The end result can fit in the palm of your hand. Just make sure it gets light.
#5 Mini vase
Use a small bulb to showcase a single flower.
#6 Vases Vases Not on the High Street
If you'd rather not risk using a real lightbulb, plenty of crafters make sturdier vases in the shape of bulbs.
#7 Salt and pepper shakers
Make sure you use a bulb with thicker glass for this project.
#8 Spice jars
If the thought of using actual bulbs for this weirds you out, you can get lightbulb-shaped jars from craft stores.
#9 Oil lamps
Old lightbulbs can give light again, just in a slightly less technologically advanced manner.
#10 Jewelry
Vintage bulbs in smaller sizes make for eye-catching pendants.
#11 Bumblebee decorations
A little paint and some pipe cleaners make for adorable and lightweight spring decorations.
#12 Holiday wreath
Old holiday lights can still be festive even if they don't light up. You can attach them to a wreath frame with some other holiday accessories for a bright, vintage look.
#13 Tree ornaments
The shape of a lightbulb actually lends itself pretty well to a variety of items, including snowmen, trees, and reindeer.
#14 A beaded centerpiece
These look great on a holiday table, and you can switch up the colors for any occasion. You can get the bulbs to stand up by using containers like this or by setting them in rice or sand.
#15 Penguin ornaments
There's no limit to how you can decorate the bulbs.
#16 Tiny snow globes
If plants aren't your thing, you can add miniatures to the bulbs and then fill them with glitter. Liquids are optional if you want to keep it lightweight.
#17 Snowman ornaments
If you're working with clear bulbs, you can also try coating the inside with glitter, which will reduce your chance of getting glitter everywhere.
