Paul Servat and Barbara Bienvenue were dating for just two months when she announced that she was pregnant. At the time, he had no reason to believe she may be lying to him. Hindsight has made it possible for Paul to see that Barbara's behavior was very peculiar during her "pregnancy."

The biggest cause for concern was the number of babies the couple was expecting. In the beginning, Barbara was expecting one child. After a few weeks, it changed to twins, then triplets, then quadruplets until she finally settled on quintuplets a week before she was due to give birth.

Happy family and community support

With five babies on the way, Paul just knew that the couple was going to need some financial support. He wanted to give his children the best start in life, so he created a Facebook page to collect donations from local charities, stores, and neighbors. The community showed overwhelming support and happily donated clothing and furniture to the expectant couple. Paul began installing the new furniture in their Montreal home. Paul was already happy, but he became ecstatic when Barbara offered to let him be the one to name the five babies. "We were so happy," he said.

Questionable story

Even though her belly was getting bigger, Barbara's bump was not large enough for five fetuses. One of the couple's acquaintances was first to be suspicious. "I gave her tips on how to handle it, where to get financial support, where to get sponsors for diapers," Genevieve Laflamme said when talking about how she noticed that there were too many holes in Barbara's story.

Five babies?

The main thing that Genevieve could not believe was true is that just a week before Barbara was due to deliver, she claimed the doctors discovered she was carrying five babies instead of four. Surely that would have shown up on the ultrasound beforehand.

Living in denial

Even though the people surrounding the couple had become suspicious, Paul was oblivious. He was blindly preparing for the arrival of all five of his children and posing for pictures with an expectant Barbara. Even Paul's parents were clueless. Paul said, "They were so looking forward to having grandchildren."

In labor

One day, Paul rushed Barbara to the hospital believing that she was in labor. Instead of delivering his five babies, the doctors had other news to give to him. Barbara was never pregnant. "The doctors told me it was a phantom pregnancy," Paul stated after spending the last 34 weeks expecting to become a father.

It was not the first time.

What makes this story even more sickening is the fact that this is not the first time that Barbara has done this. A former boyfriend of hers says that it happened with him too. One of Barbara's relatives said, "This isn’t the first time she’s done it, but honestly, we never would have thought she was sick enough to do it again. She cut ties with us in recent months. She didn’t want us to know about her game."

Not only has Barbara faked pregnancy, she also once pretended to have leukemia. After doctors realized this was not the first time she faked a pregnancy, they placed her under psychological observation. "Doctors need to take care of her or else she’ll do it again and again," her relative also added.

Meanwhile, Paul was left to pick up the pieces of a shattered heart. A friend reported that, when he spoke to Paul, he was crying, broken-hearted, and just did not understand. One of Barbara's relatives said, "He doesn’t deserve to live with this."
